Community: Join Big Brothers Big Sisters of Conejo Valley and Impact a Child's Life @BBSVCInfo @VENTURASHERIFF #LASD

Hi Nixle User,

Local Big Brothers Big Sisters Event Inspires Law Enforcement

As the holidays quickly approach and we start to feel the pull of the giving spirit grow around us, many of us start looking for ways to give back to our community and try to brighten the lives of the ones we walk amongst on a daily basis. What if you could do something that improves your life as much as it does the person receiving your aid?  Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) has been facilitating mentorship throughout the Conejo Valley for over 44 years, providing friendship, guidance, and commitment to children in need. Youth from single-parent families, low-income households, or with a history of physical, emotional, or substance abuse, are matched with suitable adult mentors from Calabasas to Ventura, and every community in between.

Thousand Oaks Chief of Police Tim Hagel and Westlake Village Liaison Lieutenant Jennifer Seetoo attended a Big Brothers Big Sisters event hosted by local resident and President of BBBS Conejo Valley, Richard Burke.  Foreseeing the positive impact this program will have on their communities, Chief Hagel and Lieutenant Seetoo are committed to partnering their efforts and inspiring citizen involvement with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.  From a law enforcement perspective, getting the youth submersed in BBBS mentorships deters potential criminal behavior in a child's future. Hagel and Seetoo were honored to support this worthy cause, and meet CEO of BBBS Conejo Valley, Lynne West.  Lieutenant Seetoo was also joined by Conejo Valley School District candidate, and BBBS supporter, Brian Sullivan.  She was extremely moved to witness the success of the program, having the opportunity to meet former youths who have grown to become contributing members of the community.

Studies show that youth who have had to deal with negative life situations typically show a pattern of negative social and familial relationships, poor decision making, poor grades and problems related to drug and alcohol abuse.  The team of dedicated Big Brothers and Big Sisters has made it their mission to facilitate positive, life lasting bonds and national research has shown that the program is successful.  According to a study that analyzed the impact of the BBBS program, kids that were matched with suitable mentors were:

*  more confident in their school performance

*  able to get along better with their families

*  46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs

*  27% less likely to begin using alcohol

*  52% less likely to skip school

Imagine if you could be a part of these numbers.  What if you could turn a child's life around and be the positive role model that they desperately need, help them to see the potential inside themselves. And what if you could do this by just being a part of someone's life, talking to them, spending time with them doing things you both love to do?  If you can't commit to the time it takes to support a youth, your donation will go a long way to improve their lives instead.  To change the life of a child aged 6-18 specifically in the Conejo Valley area (which includes the cities of Westlake Village, Agoura Hills and Calabasas), or to donate to this division directly, please visit www.BBSvc.org or call their local office at (805) 484-2282.
