Community: #LASD's DUI / CDL Checkpoint, City of Compton, Thursday, July 30th 2015, Nets 16 Arrests

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

Compton, CA - Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Compton Station conducted a DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint on July 30th 2015 on Central Avenue just north of Rosecrans Avenue between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.

DUI/Drivers License checkpoints have been shown to lower DUI deaths and injuries. A major component of these checkpoints are the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired, bringing about more awareness and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent. Ninety Percent of California drivers approve of checkpoints.

1053 Vehicles through the Checkpoint

776 Drivers Checked at the Checkpoint

2 DUI – Drug (Marijuana) Suspect Arrested

1 DUI –Alcohol Suspect Arrested

12 Unlicensed Driver was Arrested and Sent to Court

12 Vehicles were Released per Checkpoint Release Procedures

1 Driver was arrested for driving on a suspended drivers license

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will be conducting additional DUI/Drivers License Checkpoints and DUI Saturation Patrols throughout the upcoming year in our ongoing commitment to lowering deaths and injuries upon our streets and highways.

Funding for these operations is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety http://www.ots.ca.gov/ through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration http://www.nhtsa.gov/

Advisory: #LASD Solicitation of Prostitution "Sex Buyer" Sting, 25200 Blk of the Old Rd, Unincorp Santa Clarita @SCVSheriff

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

On Thursday, July 30, 2015, in an on-going effort by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s to combat Human Trafficking, an internet “sex buyer” sting was conducted in the unincorporated area of Santa Clarita.

Investigators from the Sheriff’s Department’s Human Exploitation and Trafficking Team, in conjunction with deputies from the Santa Clarita Station, conducted an operation specifically designed to target suspects attempting to buy sex after answering internet advertisements.

Three males were arrested for misdemeanor charges of solicitation, after they responded to internet sex ads and met undercover deputies at a local hotel room.  None of the suspects resided in the Santa Clarita Area.

Additionally, detectives scoured the internet advertisements in the area in an effort to identify and rescue any juveniles who may be victims of human trafficking; however, no juveniles were located.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Human Exploitation and Trafficking Team strives to impact human trafficking in all its forms, from both the supply and demand aspects.

Community: CHP Investigators Arrest 9-1-1 Call Center Bomb Threat Suspect.

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – On July 28, 2015, at 3:44 PM, a female suspect made a terrorist threat via telephone to the Los Angeles Regional Transportation Management Center (LARTMC) located in Eagle Rock CA. LARTMC is home to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) L.A. Communications Center (LACC), where the call was received. The caller threatened to injure employees and destroy the facility with a bomb and used profanity before promptly disconnecting from the call.

LACC personnel immediately notified CHP Investigators and requested assistance from Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), and Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). Communications staff activated systems to re-route all cellular calls from L.A. County to our sister facilities in Ventura, Orange County and San Bernardino. Individual CHP stations had to go into self-dispatch mode in order to maintain control of calls for service. CHP and Department of Transportation (DOT) personnel then evacuated the facility to pre-designated locations.

Specially trained explosive detection canines from CHP and LAPD were utilized to search the perimeter and every single floor of the building. A thorough search of the facility revealed no explosive device or any traces of explosives to be present.

Just before 6 p.m., the "all clear" was given and employees and dispatch operations fully resumed. Although there are protocols in place to safeguard public safety when threats such as this are received, this event was a reckless misuse of the 9-1-1 system and protocols intended for use during legitimate emergencies. CHP and DOT employees also had to endure the elements and kept from their duties without good cause. Lastly, numerous hours of CHP, LAPD and LAFD resources were wasted by having to concentrate their efforts toward a non-existent emergency.

CHP Investigators expedited an investigation utilizing confidential means and at 9:16 p.m., arrested Margaret M. Gallagher at a residence in Ventura County for making Criminal Threats.
