Community: The LASD reminds you DON'T SHOOT! Shooting a gun into the air is a felony. Please, celebrate New Year's Eve safely.

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

Each return of New Year's Eve brings the opportunity to symbolically say good bye to old habits and outmoded things, and begin a new chapter in one’s life with fresh ideas and a brighter outlook.

Unfortunately and all too often, the celebration of brooming-out the old and welcoming-in the new is disrupted by indiscriminate gunfire into the air.  The adage of "what goes up, must come down" rings especially true in this case, and with the acceleration of gravity, physics determine free-falling objects speed up as they return to earth.  The danger of injuring someone with firing even a single round into the air is a lethal prospect.  Each year, tragic reports nationwide tell of unsuspecting victims being struck and tragically injured by falling bullets caused by celebratory gunfire.

Despite public warnings and common sense, many people across Los Angeles disregard advisements and basic firearm safety, and discharge firearms into the air to celebrate the arrival of the new year.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department wants all to know shooting into the air is not only irresponsible, but a felony-level crime.  Willfully discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner which could result in injury or death to a person is a violation of section 246.3(a) of the California Penal Code.

If you see someone discharge a firearm in public or into the air, take immediate shelter and call 9-1-1.  Do not attempt to confront the shooter.

So, enjoy all the fun of New Year’s Eve offerings safely, but allow others the same opportunity to celebrate, as well:  Don’t shoot.

Advisory: Christmas Joy for Multnomah St. Elementary Sch, Deaf & Hard of Hearing Students, @EBILasd Men's Central Jail #

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

On Thursday, December 15, 2016, deputies and custody assistants from the Education Based Incarceration (EBI) Unit at Men’s Central Jail delivered toys to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program (DHH) students at Multnomah Street Elementary School in the City of Los Angeles.  The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program is comprised of twenty six students ranging from 3 to 11 years of age.

Each student received a bag filled with toys and other goodies; the girls in the program also received dolls constructed by the female inmates at Century Regional Detention Center (CRDF).  In addition to the dolls, deputies and custody assistants from the Education Based Incarceration Unit at CRDF donated more toys to make this event a bigger success.

Principal Asavasopon tearfully thanked the EBI Staff and remarked, “no one has ever done something so thoughtful for her students.” Principal Asavasopon posted additional photos of the event on the school website. http://www.multnomahelementary.org/deaf-and-hard-of-hearing.html

Special thanks to EBI Sergeants Art Vargas, and Alex Gamboa, Deputies Herb Aguirre and Jessica Rosas, Custody Assistants, Santos, Stark, and Towner, for their toy donations and coordinating this very special event for the DHH students at Multnomah Street School.  Deputy Aguirre is an alumni of Multnomah Street School and still has ties to the community.
