Community: The Boys and Girls Clubs 12th Annual 'Stand Up For Kids' Gala a Huge Success #Boys&GirlsClub @BGC_GCV #LASD

Dear Nixle User,

On Saturday, October 18, 2014, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Conejo Valley hosted its 12th Annual ‘Stand Up For Kids’ Gala Dinner & Auction. The event was a huge success, exceeding expectations and gaining more support and interest for the organization than in previous years.  Members of the community attended as well as city and state officials in order to raise awareness for the local Boys & Girls Clubs, guiding and mentoring kids from Newbury Park to Calabasas.

For many years, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Greater Conejo Valley has been dedicated to providing children ages 3-14 with nurturing and inspiring after school and summer programs that have proven effective in helping children succeed in life.  The Boys & Girls Club gives kids the resources to discover the potential in themselves, as well as providing them with ways to develop character through fine arts, academic support and health and fitness. Kids and their parents are able to choose the programs and activities that interest them and that they believe they will most benefit from. Because the Boys & Girls Club firmly believes that every child should be able to benefit from these programs, the organization depends on the generosity of individuals to ensure that all children can benefit from the Club.

The 12th Annual ‘Stand Up For Kids’ Gala Dinner & Auction was held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village, and every dollar raised went towards the funding and operating of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Greater Conejo Valley.  Some attendees included retired U.S. Representative Elton Gallegly, City of Agoura Hills Council Member Denis Weber, Agoura Hills City Manager Greg Ramirez, City of Calabasas Council Member Fred Gaines, as well as many Conejo Valley and Las Virgenes School District representatives. During the gala, guests were welcomed by members of the program as well as a professional photographer, and were invited to browse an extensive array of silent auction items while enjoying the sounds of the Boys & Girls Club choir group.  The focal point of the evening was the live auction, which helped to secure the record setting fund raising efforts, while dancing and dessert rounded out the evening’s events.
According to Lieutenant Seetoo of the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station, who also attended the gala, “The evening was magical and moving.” Lt. Seetoo further recognized the necessity of community involvement in order to support this program, and stresses the importance of prevention, rather than reaction. “Giving kids guidance from an early age will prevent crime. The Boys & Girls Club provides this guidance, and the community needs to come together to support this worthy cause.”

Community: LA Cnty Sheriff's Depart's Traffic Services Detail DUI/CDL Checkpoint, Lakewood, Sat. Nov. 1, 2014. Drive Sober & Choose Your Ride Home

Dear Nixle User,

Driving Under the Influence / Driver’s License (DUI/CDL) Checkpoints are conducted by deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on a regular basis.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Traffic Services Detail will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Saturday, November 1, 2014, at an undisclosed location within the City of Lakewood, between the hours of 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes.  Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely.

In California, this deadly crime led to 802 deaths in 2012 because someone failed to designate a sober driver.  Nationally, the latest data shows nearly 10,000 were killed by an impaired driver. “Over the course of the past three years in the contract cities policed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, DUI collisions have claimed 33 lives and resulted in 898 injury crashes harming 1330 of our friends and neighbors,” said Sgt. Daniel A. Dail of Traffic Services Detail.

Deputies will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment with officers checking drivers for proper licensing delaying motorists only momentarily.  When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving.  Recent statistics reveal that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems.  A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent).  Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent.  Nearly 90 percent of California drivers approve of DUI checkpoints.

DUI Checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.

Funding for these operations is provided to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety http://www.ots.ca.gov/ through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration http://www.nhtsa.gov/, reminding everyone to ‘Report Drunk Driver – Call 9-1-1.

AS A DRIVER, PLAN AHEAD WITH THESE TIPS:

Arrange rides home for your friends, family, co-workers and yourself before the drinking begins

Identify and provide free non-alcoholic drinks or other promotional items to the Designated Driver

Party hosts and servers must limit drinks to your guests or patrons. Don’t serve more than one or two over several hours.

Cut back on the amount of drinks you plan to bring to the party – and provide plenty of food.

MEDIA NOTES: To schedule an interview regarding the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Safety Operations, please contact Sergeant Daniel A. Dail at 323-890-5400 or via email at DADail@lasd.org.

Dear Nixle User,

Ventura County Sheriff Killed in Line of Duty

On October 28, 2014, Ventura County Sheriff's Deputy Eugene Kostiuchenko was killed in the line of duty after being struck by a vehicle during a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle was arrested by the California Highway Patrol for felony D.U.I.

Deputy Kostiuchenko initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle on northbound Highway 101 at Lewis Road in Camarillo at about 1:14 a.m. He exited his vehicle to make contact with the driver. Two deputies arrived to assist with the traffic stop. Later in the contact, Eugene released the driver from the traffic stop and walked back to his vehicle when he was struck by another vehicle. The vehicle narrowly missed colliding with the assisting deputies. The driver of that vehicle continued traveling northbound at a high rate of speed. Responding deputies found the vehicle, which was involved in a solo collision off the roadway near Las Posas Rd. Deputy Kostiuchenko was pronounced deceased at the scene of the traffic stop.

Deputy Kostiuchenko, age 41, was an 11-year veteran of the department. He was assigned to patrol in the City of Camarillo before his untimely passing. He is survived by his wife and two sons. Eugene also worked assignments in the Sheriff's Office of Emergency Services and in Detention Services during his career. The men and women of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office mourn the loss Deputy Kostiuchenko and are keeping his family in their thoughts during this difficult time.
