City of Malibu Emergency Services

Advisory: Overnight closures (7PM-6AM) McClure Tunnel & nearby ramps begin 1st week of Jan 2021 for Caltrans project

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

Caltrans will begin work in the first week of January 2021 on a project to upgrade the tunnel lighting system in the McClure Tunnel and install a queue warning system on the Santa Monica Fwy (I-10) and State Route 1 (PCH) in Santa Monica.  The project is anticipated to be completed in Spring 2021.

The work zone spans one-mile from Lincoln Blvd on I-10 to the Broadway Pedestrian Overcrossing on PCH.  Overnight full closures of the McClure Tunnel and nearby ramps will occur during construction.

The project will include the following:

• Crews will upgrade the lighting system in the McClure Tunnel to LED lights for improved visibility.

• A queue warning system, the first in Los Angeles County, will be installed on westbound I-10 to provide automatic, real-time alerts to motorists when queues accumulate at the McClure Tunnel. Motorists will be alerted if they need to slow down as they approach the tunnel.

• The project will install a speed feedback sign, a high-friction surface treatment to the pavement inside the tunnel, and an upgrade to overhead signage in the project area.

Construction is scheduled to start the first week of January 2021. Overnight full closures of the McClure Tunnel will occur to facilitate a safe work zone. Detour signs will be posted for all full closures. Ramp closures associated with the project will occur mostly overnight between 7:00 PM and 6:00 AM.

Closures are weather-permitting and subject to change. Motorists should expect delays and are advised to use alternate routes during construction hours.

Motorists can view current traffic closures before they leave for their destination by visiting the Caltrans Quickmap (http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/). Residents and businesses located near the freeway are advised to anticipate noise, vibrations, and dust associated with construction activities.

City of Malibu Emergency Services

Advisory: Red Flag Warning for Malibu 8AM Wed, 12/23 - 12PM Thurs, 12/24 due to Santa Ana winds & low humidity

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

A Red Flag Warning will be in effect much of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, including  Malibu, from 8:00 AM Wednesday, December 23 through 12:00 PM Thursday, December 24 due to moderate Santa Ana winds and very low humidity.

Gusty Santa Ana winds are expected to increase rapidly across Los Angeles and Ventura counties early Wednesday morning, then peak in strength Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night when wind gusts of 40 to 60 mph are expected across wind favored areas.

Very dry fuels in combination with gusty winds and very low humidity increases potential for extreme fire behavior, rapid growth and spread and long-range spotting with any fire start.

The first widespread rain event of the winter is also forecast Sunday afternoon through Monday.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department will have augmented staffing in place, ready for tactical deployment. On-duty resources have been pre-identified for strike team mobilization based upon the need.

IMPACTS:
Increased risk of fire ignitions due to strong winds downing trees and powerlines; Increased risk of power outages; If fire ignition occurs, conditions will be favorable for very rapid fire growth, extreme fire behavior, and long range spotting bringing a significant threat to life and property. Hazardous road conditions, potential traffic signal outages.

PREPARATIONS:
The LA County Fire Department reported that it has augmented staffing, ready for deployment and on-duty resources have been pre-identified for strike team mobility based upon the need.

The City is coordinating with LA County Sheriff’s, Fire, Public Works Departments, Caltrans and other partner agencies, is monitoring fire conditions and will send out alerts as needed.

City Public Works is out patrolling City streets and canyon roads in Malibu monitoring for downed power lines, tree branches, road hazards, and clearing debris from roadways.

Trancas Canyon Park and Charmlee Wilderness Park will be closed Wednesday, December 23 and Thursday, December 24 as a safety precaution.

BE PREPARED:
Residents should be prepared for potential wildfires and power outages associated with high winds, and potential evacuations if a fire occurs. Potential for malfunctioning traffic signals. Always approach an intersection where traffic signals are out as if it is an all-way stop sign. Watch for branches and other debris in the roadway.

Please check on neighbors and friends who are elderly, disabled or have mobility challenges. Check the Malibu Emergency Survival Guide for tips on preparing for evacuations: www.MalibuCity.org/SurvivalGuide.

ORIGINAL PRESS RELEASE IS AS FOLLOWS:

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will hold a DUI Checkpoint December 19th, 2020 from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location within city limits.

Checkpoint locations are chosen based on a history of DUI crashes and arrests. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired.

During the checkpoint, officers will look for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

As the state continues to work to stop the spread of COVID-19, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is committed to keeping the public safe.

“The safety of our community is and always will be our mission,” Sergeant Robert Hill said. “We are still out there looking for impaired drivers because driving under the influence is still dangerous.”

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. Always follow directions for use and read warning labels about driving or ”operating heavy machinery,” which includes driving a car. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.

If you plan on drinking or taking medications that may impact your ability to drive safely, plan on staying at home.

Drivers charged with DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
