Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide investigators are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of a male adult.

Deputies from the Century Station responded to a call for service regarding a “person down” on the 1600 block of East 76th Street, in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles. Upon arriving, the deputies located the victim who was suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper torso.

Paramedics arrived and pronounced the victim deceased on scene.

Investigators have learned the victim lived in an RV that was parked in the cul-de-sac, where he was found.

Three male Hispanics possibly walked to the end of the cul-de-sac and engaged the victim, opening fire on him and fleeing the scene on foot.

This investigation is on-going and there is no additional information available at this time.

Advisory: **Press Release: Carson Mass Shooting Incident**

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

On Saturday, June 17, 2023, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department South Patrol Division-Chief Myron Johnson along with Operations Safe Streets Lieutenant Richard Conti held a press conference to discuss the details surrounding a shooting that occurred in the city of Carson.

Speakers included Chief Johnson, Captain Jones, Lieutenant Richard Conti from LASD-Operation Safe Streets Bureau and the Mayor of Carson- Lula Davis-Holmes. Also in attendance were additional members from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, City of Carson-City Manager’s office, City of Carson elected officials, and members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

On June 17, 2023, at approximately 12:05 a.m. deputies from Carson Sheriff’s Station were dispatched to the 1500 block of Abila Street in the City of Carson regarding a gunshot victim call for service.

When deputies arrived, they located five gunshot victims suffering from various gunshot wounds including injuries to their head, back, and upper and lower body areas.

Witnesses at the scene notified deputies of two additional victims who had been transported by civilians to local hospitals prior to their arrival.

Deputies immediately assessed the victims and began life saving measures until relieved by LA County Fire Department personnel.

At approximately 12:07 a.m. a second call for service was received. The call indicated that a vehicle had crashed into a brick retaining wall of a property on the 21800 block of Martin Street in the City of Carson, approximately ¼ mile away from the Abila Street location.

When deputies arrived, they located a Male Hispanic, 16 years of age suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body.  Two additional passengers were in the vehicle but were not struck by gunfire.

There are a total of 8 victims ranging from 16-24 years of age. Two of the victims are listed in critical but stable condition in local hospitals and six were listed in stable (non-life threatening) condition. One of the six has recently been released from the hospital.

Operation Safe Streets Bureau detectives responded to the scene to conduct the initial investigation. They currently have over a dozen detectives investigating this incident.

There is no confirmation at this time indicating this was a gang related incident.

City of Malibu Emergency Services

Advisory: City of Malibu will discontinue using Nixle system. Malibu will continue using website alerts & Everbridge.

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

In an effort to streamline its emergency communications processes, the City has discontinued the Nixle alerting service, which the City has been using for several years for sending out advisories about lower-level emergencies, traffic incidents, utility outages, hazardous weather, and beach closures to the Malibu community.

The City will continue to use its website alert system when necessary for advisories about lower-level emergencies, traffic incidents, utility outages, hazardous weather, and beach closures by text and email to subscribers. To sign up for website alerts, or add or remove alert categories, visit www.MalibuCity.org/News and scroll to “Alert Center.”

The Nixle system has become redundant, since Nixle was bought by Everbridge, the system that the City uses for disaster notifications in case of major emergencies that pose an imminent threat to life and property, and evacuations. All Nixle subscribers have been merged into the Everbridge system, and will receive Everbridge alerts from the City in case of major emergencies. Eliminating the Nixle system will reduce the time and number of steps it takes to put out emergency messaging.

Most landline and cell phone numbers with Malibu addresses are automatically uploaded into the Everbridge system. However, residents, business owners, employees and other community members may create a profile in Everbridge to add additional contact information, such as secondary phone numbers by visiting www.MalibuCity.org/DisasterNotifications.

For more information about the City’s alerting systems, visit www.MalibuCity.org/EmergencyAlerts. For questions or assistance, please email PublicSafety@MalibuCity.org.

LASD - Los Angeles County Sheriffs Dept Information Bureau (SIB)

Robert G. Luna, Sheriff

Advisory: #LASD Major Crimes Bureau-BRTF Arrest Multiple Organized Retail Theft Suspects

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

In an effort to quell the rise in Organized Retail Theft, which has caused a direct effect on the quality of life of the citizens and businesses in Los Angeles County, the LASD Major Crimes Bureau Metro Detail – Burglary-Robbery Taskforce (BRTF) worked in conjunction with the East Los Angeles Station Special Problems Team and Summer Enforcement Team to apprehend suspects, deter criminal activity, and protect life and property in partnership with the Nike Community Store in East Los Angeles.

On June 2, 2023, and June 03, 2023, Detectives with BRTF conducted a surveillance operation at the Nike Community Store, which has experienced losses exceeding $750,000 dollars during the past year. During the operation 12 arrests were made, 9 of which were felonies. An Organized Retail Theft crew was identified and arrested, and $2669.28 of recovered merchandise was returned to Nike.

BRTF detectives and deputies from the East Los Angeles Station teams conducted follow-up related to one of the theft incidents and recovered an assault rifle from a residence.  During the course of the operation, the East Los Angeles Station Special Problems Team and Summer Enforcement Team deputies assisted with the recovery of two stolen vehicles, one of which was involved in a carjacking.

The LASD MCB BRTF was formed over ten years ago to combat the ever-increasing trend of organized crews who are committing residential burglaries along with violent robbery crime trends.  The MCB BRTF works closely in support of all LASD station’s detective bureaus, as well as other Southern California law enforcement agencies.  Residents and business owners are reminded to secure their properties, be aware of suspicious and unusual persons or vehicles, and to alert their local law enforcement immediately if suspicious activity is observed.

Residents should call 911 if a life-threatening emergency is detected and/or their local police business line if a suspicious person or vehicle is observed.  The MCB BRTF can be contacted via e-mail at BRTF@LASD.org for tips, questions, or concerns.
