Community: *Joint Press Release* Celebrating the New Year with Gunfire will Not Be Tolerated in the City or County of Los Angeles

Hi Pepperdine Libboard,

*Joint Press Release*Celebrating the New Year with Gunfire will Not December 31, 2013
Celebrating the New Year with Gunfire will Not be Tolerated in the
City and County of Los Angeles

Los Angeles: Every year, a significant number of people throughout the City and County of Los Angeles engage in the extremely dangerous practice of discharging firearms into the air to celebrate the arrival of the New Year. In an effort to educate and warn the public of the problem, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) have embarked upon an awareness campaign. This campaign is designed to help reduce incidents of indiscriminate gunfire that, while on the decline, has continued to be a deadly tradition in our County and in our City.

The Gunfire Reduction Campaign aims to advise the community that celebrating the New Year with gunfire will not be tolerated in the County and City of Los Angeles. California Penal Code Section 246.3 prohibits negligent discharging of firearms. Any person who violates Section 246.3 will have their firearm confiscated and will be arrested for a felony crime.

Today, LAPD Commander Justin Eisenberg and LASD Sheriff Lee Baca held a news conference to publicize their concern about holiday-related celebratory gunfire. To make a significant impact on this problem, thousands of "Don't Shoot" flyers and posters have been printed and distributed to the community. It is the hope of both agencies that with the partnership of the media and the distribution of "Don't Shoot" flyers, the public will be informed regarding the dangers and dire consequences of this irresponsible act.

In addition to the Gunfire Reduction Campaign, a technological tool called the Shotspotter is assisting Deputies in the field with locating people who fire guns. This piece of advanced technology is deployed at Century Sheriff's Station areas and can pinpoint gunfire within a few feet of where the shots were fired. "This is beneficial because it can tell the Deputies where the suspect is located and the data allows them to develop violence suppression strategies and tactical plans. This has been an extremely successful crime fighting initiative and one of many tools that help decrease crime in the County," said Sheriff Baca. Last New Year's Eve, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department recorded 93 calls related to illegal shooting. This accounted for 4% of the total calls for service from 8 p.m. on December 31, 2012 to 4 a.m. on January 1, 2013. There was an 11% increase in gunshot calls for service over the previous year. This is the first rise in the number of gunshot calls for service since 2009.

On July 4, 1999, Brian Perez, a young, outgoing, 9 year-old boy was playing with family members in the front yard of his home. Someone in the area discharged a firearm into the sky and the stray bullet struck Brian in the head, killing him. Therefore, with the effectiveness of this Gunfire Reduction Campaign, there have been no known deaths by indiscriminate gunfire in the City of Los Angeles."

The public is also reminded that toy replica guns that resemble real weapons are also a concern for law enforcement officers and that playing with replica guns is strongly discouraged.
Together, the proud men and women of Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department ask the public to STOP the senseless act of firing weapons into the air and CELEBRATE SAFELY.

In addition, should a shooting occur, members of the community are encouraged to call 9-1-1. To report information regarding a crime, please call 1-877-LAPD-24-7. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous should call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477). Tipsters may also contact Crimestoppers by texting to phone number 274637 (C-R-I-M-E-S on most keypads) with a cell phone.
All text messages should begin with the letters "LAPD." Tipsters may also go to www.LAPDOnline.org, click on "webtips" and follow the prompts, or typing in: http://lacrimestoppers.org.

For more information, please call LAPD Media Relations Section, at (213) 486-5910, or the LASD's Public Information Officer, Nicole Nishida, at (323) 810-1973.

Community: LASD DUI /CDL Jan. Checkpoints in Bellflower Carson Lynwood Norwalk West Hollywood #DriveSober & #ChooseYourRideHome

Hi Pepperdine Libboard,

Driving Under the Influence/Driver’s License (DUI/CDL) Checkpoints are conducted by deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on a regular basis.

Some of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department DUI checkpoints are coordinated by the Sheriff’s Traffic Services Detail and include:

Friday, January 3, 2014, City of Lakewood, 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

Saturday, January 4, 2014, City of Bellflower, 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

Thursday, January 9, 2014, City of Lynwood, 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

Friday, January 17, 2014, City of West Hollywood, 7:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m.

Friday, January 24, 2014, City of Carson, 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

Thursday, January 30, 2014, City of Norwalk, 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

Friday, January 31, 2014, City of Bellflower, 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough.

Deputies will be contacting drivers passing through the checkpoint for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment. Deputies will also check drivers for proper licensing and will strive to delay motorists only momentarily. When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving. Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000.

In 2011, nearly 10,000 people were killed nationally in motor vehicle traffic crashes that involved at least one driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration of .08% or higher. In California, this deadly crime led to 774 deaths because someone failed to designate a sober driver. “Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed 49 lives and resulted in 893 injury crashes harming 1,113 of our friends and neighbors,” said Sgt. Joseph Jakl of the Risk Management Bureau.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent. Based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, DUI Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public.

“Saving lives, reducing injuries, traffic collisions and property damage is important work,” said Sheriff Lee Baca. "Every life is a life worth saving and we will do our utmost to help keep the public safe."

Funding for these operations is provided to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety http://www.ots.ca.gov/ through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration http://www.nhtsa.gov/, reminding everyone to continue to work together to bring an end to these tragedies.

Community: 175+ Children Visiting Inmates At Men's Central Jail Given Toys by LA Sheriff's Deputies - LASD

Hi Pepperdine Libboard,

Photos - Click on the link at the bottom of this message

Sheriff's Deputies from Men’s Central Jail (MCJ) Visiting Center and Education Based Incarceration Bureau (EBI) hosted their second annual holiday toy distribution on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, for the children that visited incarcerated family members at Men’s Central Jail.

More than 175 children were at the Men’s Central Visiting Center and received a toy and hand-made blanket.

The blankets were made by inmates who participated in EBI’s MERIT (Maximizing Education Reaching Individual Transformation) Program at MCJ.

The blanket project provides the EBI inmates the opportunity to enhance their rehabilitative efforts by engaging them in a community service program. While making the blankets, inmates discussed with EBI staff the act of giving and improving relationships with their own children.

The toys were generously provided through donations from local businesses including JADA Toys of City of Industry, Toys R Us, Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), Friends Outside, Inter-Agency Council on Child Abuse and Neglect (ICAN) Board, Special Olympics, and many others.

The Education Based Incarceration Bureau (EBI) is responsible for managing the 67 inmate educational and vocational programs within the seven Los Angeles County jails. There are approximately 18,000 inmates in the County jail system. Within that population, there are currently more than 7,000 inmates participating in the diverse learning programs.
