Community: Avoid the 100 DUI Task Force Deploying Saturation Patrols Super Bowl Sunday

Hi Pepperdine Libboard,

The Super Bowl is one of America’s most highly anticipated sporting events gathering friends and family in homes, bars and restaurants to celebrate. As game day approaches and football fans across the country prepare for the game, the National Football League (NFL), the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will be joining forces with the Los Angeles County Avoid the 100 DUI Task Force to spread the message about designating a sober driver, because – Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.

Nationally in 2012, alcohol-impaired-driving crashes took 10,322 lives. Californians witnessed 802 deaths in DUI crashes on their streets and highways. These crashes were 31 percent more likely to occur on weekends than on weekdays.

“For football fans, Super Bowl Sunday is one of the best days of the year,” said Glendora Police Chief Tim Staab. “Have a great time, but please don’t allow the celebration to result in a drunk driving arrest. Act responsibly, designate a sober driver before the Super Bowl party begins and leave your car keys at home.”

The Los Angeles County Avoid the 100 Coalition will be deploying special DUI Saturation Patrols in communities around the county. Every regularly scheduled patrol officer working will be watching for the tell-tale signs of impaired driving before, during and after the game.

Whether watching at a bar or hosting a party, the NFL, the Office of Traffic Safety, NHTSA, and the Los Angeles County Avoid DUI Task Force reminds everyone that Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk. Before choosing to drink, choose your team’s MVP – a sober designated driver.

The ‘Avoid’ DUI Task Force offers these additional safety tips:

If you’re attending a Super Bowl party or watching the game at a sports bar or restaurant
 Designate your sober driver, or plan another way to get home safely before the party begins
 If you don’t have a designated driver, ask a sober friend for a ride home; call a cab,
friend, or family member to come and get you; or just stay for the night
 Use your community’s sober ride program
 And remember, your seat belt is your best defense against a drunk driver in a crash

If you’re hosting a Super Bowl party
 Make sure all your guests designate a sober driver in advance, or arrange for alternate transportation to ensure they get home safely
 Serve food and include non-alcoholic beverages at the party
 Stop serving alcohol at the end of the third quarter of the game and begin serving coffee and dessert
 Keep the numbers for local cab companies handy, and take the keys away from anyone who has had too much to drink

Never let friends drive if they have had too much to drink. Stay connected with OTS via: http://www.facebook.com/CaliforniaOTS, http://twitter.com/#!/OTS_CA , www.ots.ca.gov

Avoid the 100 DUI Task Force funding is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that reminds everyone to ‘Report Drunk Drivers! Call 9-1-1.’

Community: Suspects Arrested After Parking Lot Shooting, unrelated to LA Valley College activities - LASD Homicide

Hi Pepperdine Libboard,

Suspects Arrested After Parking Lot Shooting, unrelated to LA Valley College activities - LASD Homicide

Two suspects were arrested Sunday in San Jacinto by Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives investigating the Saturday shooting death of a man in a parking lot in Valley Glen. The victim of the shooting has been identified as Ricardo Zetino, a 31-year old resident of Tujunga.

The shooting occurred on Saturday, January 25, 2013, at approximately 7:25 P.M., in a parking lot of LA Valley College, 5800 Fulton Avenue, (at Burbank Blvd), in Valley Glen, in the east San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles. Los Angeles Police Department - Van Nuys Division officers responded to a "shots fired call." Upon their arrival, they discovered the victim outside of a vehicle in the parking lot suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department - Community College Bureau deputies worked with LAPD officers at the scene. Because the campus of LA Valley College is the jurisdiction of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Sheriff's Homicide investigators responded to the scene to conduct a homicide investigation.

No classes or campus activities were going on when the shooting occurred and the shooting was not associated with campus activities.

Investigators developed information that the shooting incident was the result of a drug deal "rip-off." The choice of the college parking lot was random.

Information developed by investigators led them to an apartment in the City of San Jacinto in Riverside County, where both suspects were located and arrested without incident.

A search warrant was executed by Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide investigators at the San Jacinto residence and two revolvers were recovered,

along with other ballistic evidence. An undetermined amount of illegal drugs were also seized, as well as the suspects' vehicle, which is believed to have been used during the murder.

Suspects Raheen Taylor, a 31-year old male, and Derrick Wilson, a 25-year old male, were booked at the Inmate Reception Center and are currently being held without bail in the Los Angeles County jail system. Both suspects are scheduled to be arraigned at Van Nuys Superior Court on Tuesday, January 28, 2013.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Or if you wish to remain Anonymous, call “LA Crime Stoppers” by dialing 800-222-TIPS (8477), texting the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org/ If you have any information about possible crime on campus, you are asked to contact LASD Community College deputies at 323-669-7555.

The Community College Bureau of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department provides contract policing and security services to the Los Angeles Community College District, http://www.laccd.edu/ the largest community college district in the nation. Community: LASD Deputy Involved Shooting After Suspect Shoots Man in Face & Shoots at Deputies While Holding Baby in Willowbrook

Hi Pepperdine Libboard,

At about 10:00 PM Sunday, January 26, a 43-year old Hispanic male suspect drove to a residence on the 2400 block of East 126th Street, Willowbrook (unincorporated South Los Angeles). While at the location the suspect confronted his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend, drew a revolver handgun and shot him in the face.

After the shooting, the suspect drove away from the location with his one year old baby boy in the car. Sheriff's deputies saw the suspect's car and attempted to make a traffic stop but the suspect refused to yield and a pursuit began.

The suspect ultimately drove back towards the original location. Once on 126th Street, the suspect stopped his car in the middle of the street. The suspect got out of his car, while holding his baby with one arm and a revolver in the other hand. The suspect continued to point the revolver at the deputies, but the deputies did not shoot the suspect for fear of hitting the baby.

The suspect tried to open a side door to his ex-girlfriend's house but the door was locked. While still holding the baby, the suspect again pointed his handgun at the deputies and fired one shot at them. The deputies did not return fire.

The suspect then tried to open the front door, but the front door was locked. Once again the suspect shot at the deputies and the deputies did not return fire.

Finally, the ex-girlfriend (the baby's mother) opened the front door and took the baby away from the suspect and returned inside the house.

Once the ex-girlfriend had the baby, the suspect again pointed his handgun at the deputies and that is when a deputy involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was struck multiple times by gunfire from the deputies. He was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries. He is listed in critical condition but is expected to survive.

The victim of the attempt murder was transported to a local hospital and is also expected to survive.

The suspect’s handgun was recovered.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. If you prefer to provide information anonymously, you may call "Crime Stoppers" by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477), or texting the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or by using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org

Whenever a Deputy-Involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputies, and it results in a wounding, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Office of the Los Angeles District Attorney and the Los Angeles County Coroner, as well as investigations by Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. Attorneys with the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review also respond to the scene, and have full access to the facts known to the Sheriff's Department throughout every phase of these investigations. Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.
