About the Project

Caltrans is constructing an HOV lane in each direction on I-5 between the Hollywood Freeway (SR-170) and SR-118, a distance of 6.8 miles (3.4 miles in each direction). The project is also widening four undercrossings, replacing sections of pavement, and building a direct HOV connector at the I-5/SR-170 interchange. A direct HOV connector allows for freeway-to-freeway transfers without exiting the carpool lane.

This project will alleviate congestion, encourage carpooling, improve air quality, and provide a smoother ride for motorists. The work is part of Caltrans' effort to provide motorists with a seamless carpool lane network in California. Work began in August 2010 and is on track for completion in late 2014. Funding administered by Metro.

For the safety of the construction crew and motorists, please be attentive to closures, slow for the cone zone, and move over one lane where possible.

Caltrans thanks motorists for their patience and understanding during construction. For more information, visit I-5info.com.

Advisory: CHP to conduct a DUI checkpoint this weekend in the Antelope Valley. Be smart, stay alive, don't drink and drive.

Hi Pepperdine Libboard,

CONTACT: Gil Hernandez Public Information Officer

(661) 948-8544 9 (Fax) Lancaster, CA 93536

SOBRIETY AND DRIVERS' LICENSE CHECKPOINT

On Saturday, August 30, 2014, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be conducting a Sobriety/Driver's License Checkpoint. The exact location will be announced at a later date and time.

Captain Gretchen Jacobs stated, "The primary objective of any Sobriety/Driver's License Checkpoint is to ensure the safe passage of each and every motorist on our highways, by targeting roads where there is a high frequency of driving under the influence (DUI) related accidents and/or prior arrests. Every year residents and visitors to our local communities are needlessly injured or killed as a result of DUI related collisions. Additionally, statistics show unlicensed drivers are much more likely to become involved in a fatal traffic collision than licensed drivers. A Sobriety/Driver's License Checkpoint is an effective and proven tool to deter driving under the influence and remove unlicensed drivers from local highways. They also help raise public awareness of these most important driver safety issues while augmenting regular patrol operations."

The checkpoint will be staffed by uniformed officers from the CHP who are trained in detecting alcohol and drug impaired drivers and members of the Antelope Valley CHP senior volunteer program for administrative duties. Officers will also be equipped with hand held, blood alcohol testing devices, which provide an accurate indication of alcoholic beverage consumption.

Traffic permitting, all drivers will be screened as they pass through the checkpoint. Drivers who have been drinking, or who exhibit signs of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be detained for further evaluation and field testing. Drivers who are determined to be under the influence will be physically arrested and their vehicles towed away. Any suspended or unlicensed driver passing through the checkpoint will be cited and their vehicles may be impounded.

BE SMART AND STAY ALIVE, DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE!

Community: #BacktoSchool Traffic Safety Tips

Hi Pepperdine Libboard,

Back to School Traffic Safety Tips From the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station

A new school year has started, and the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station would like to remind parents, students, and motorists to follow basic traffic and pedestrian safety habits when traveling throughout the city, especially in school zones.

By adhering to the following traffic safety tips, the number of accidents in and around school zones can be reduced:

*Motorists should be aware that large groups of children will be on the sidewalks and crossing streets before and after school and many do not pay attention to vehicular traffic.

*Motorists need to be extra alert for sudden movements into the roadway by young people riding bicycles or walking to and from neighborhood schools.

*Parents and drivers are encouraged to allow sufficient time to drive their children to school and not to double park to allow passengers to exit the vehicle.

*Drivers should avoid any activity that distracts them while driving, e.g., adjusting the radio, talking on a cell phone, texting, or eating and drinking.

*Parents are urged to talk with their children and discuss the importance of crossing the roadway at marked intersections or within crosswalks.

*Parents are reminded that bicycle riders under the age of 18 are required by law to wear helmets.

Please do your part in making sure this school year is a positive one. Understand and follow these tip, and please notify the Malibu/Lost Hills Station if you observe any potential safety hazards.

Community: Deputy Involved Shooting Investigation, 12200 block of Santa Fe Avenue, Lynwood #LASD Homicide

Hi Pepperdine Libboard,

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deputy-involved shooting that occurred in the 12200 block of Santa Fe Avenue, Lynwood, on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at 1:00 p.m.

Two Century Station Detectives were following up on a criminal case at a residence in the 12200 block of Santa Fe Avenue in Lynwood. Once their contact was completed, they were walking away from the location when the suspect, 45-year old, Kerry Wesson, exited his home nearby and shot at the detectives with a handgun. One detective was struck by the gunfire but was able to return fire.

The suspect entered his home, several more gunshots were heard, and then he barricaded himself inside.

Special Enforcement Bureau, Special Weapons Team deputies responded to the location and took tactical control of the barricade situation. During the standoff, which lasted over two hours, the suspect fired his weapon several times.

The suspect quickly exited his residence holding a semiautomatic pistol in his hand and was shot by Special Weapons Team deputies.

Suspect Wesson was pronounced dead at the scene.

No deputies were injured. The detective shot by Suspect Wesson was listed in stable condition at a local hospital.

It was determined that there was no connection between the suspect and the investigation the detectives conducted at the location.

The suspect’s weapon a loaded semiautomatic pistol was recovered from the scene.
