Alex Villanueva, Sheriff

Advisory: Sheriff Villanueva Orders County-Wide Curfew for Los Angeles County

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

Sheriff Villanueva Orders County-Wide Curfew for Los Angeles County

In the midst of national chaos, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors proclaimed the existence of a local emergency:  Civil unrest.  The effects of public calamity caused disaster and extreme peril to the safety of people and property.  Because of the dangers which often occur under cover of darkness and the difficulty to preserve public safety during these hours, a curfew was ordered, as allowed by Government Code Section 8634, and signed by Chair Supervisor Kathryn Barger.

At the direction of Sheriff Alex Villanueva, and until further notification, a county-wide curfew was imposed.  Effective as of 6:00 P.M., Sunday, May 31, 2020, until Monday, June 1, 2020 at 6:00 A.M., all incorporated and unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County shall adhere to staying off public streets, avenues, boulevards, places, walkways, alleys, parks or any public areas or unimproved private realty within Los Angeles County, between the hours of 6:00 P.M. and 6:00 A.M. the following day.  The county may renew, amend or extend this order, in accordance with California Government Code section 8634 and County Code section 2.68.150.

This order does not apply to peace officers, fire fighters, and National Guard or other military personnel deployed to the area, individuals traveling to and from work, people experiencing homelessness and without access to a viable shelter, and individuals seeking medical treatment.

In the event the county curfew is more stringent than a resident’s local curfew order, the county curfew will supersede it.  In other words, if a resident’s local curfew order is 8:00 P.M., the 6:00 P.M. county curfew supersedes it; if the local order is 4:00 P.M., the local order still stands.

Any violation of the order is a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine not to exceed $1,000 or by imprisonment for a period not to exceed six months, or both, as provided by LACC section 2.68.320 or any applicable state or municipal law.

Advisory Message: Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Conducting Motorcycle Safety Enforcement in Malibu

Message sent via Nixle | Go to nixle.com | Unsubscribe

Saturday May 9, 2020, 10:00 AM

LASD - Malibu/Lost Hills Station, Los Angeles County Sheriff

Alex Villanueva, Sheriff

Advisory: Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Conducting Motorcycle Safety Enforcement in Malibu

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will have extra deputies out on patrol May 13, 2020, in the City of Malibu, looking for violations made by drivers and motorcyclists that increase the risk of crashes.

The motorcycle safety enforcement operation aims at educating both motorcyclists and drivers on the rules of the road.

Motorcycle fatalities have jumped dramatically in California over the past decade. In 2017, there were 576 people killed in motorcycle crashes statewide, up nearly 17 percent from 494 in 2015. Over the course of the past 3 years, motorcycle involved collisions have resulted in 47 fatal and 895 injury crashes in the cities policed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Drivers should be alert for motorcyclists, as many motorcycle crashes are caused when drivers do not see them. Check your mirrors and blind spots, especially when merging, turning or changing lanes.

Riders should make themselves visible by wearing brightly colored, protective clothing and keeping lights on during the day. Riders should also change lanes only when there is enough room and always wear a Department of Transportation compliant helmet.

Although lane splitting is now legal, motorcyclists should be extra careful traveling between lanes, avoiding the practice next to large vehicles like big rigs, buses and motorhomes, and factoring in lane width, traffic flow, and roadway conditions.

All motorcycle riders, regardless of skill level, are encouraged to enroll in the California Motorcyclist Safety Program. Information and training locations are available at http://www.californiamotorcyclist.com/ or calling 1-877 RIDE-411 (1-877-743-3411).

Funding for motorcycle safety enforcement operations are provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

MEDIA NOTES: To schedule an interview regarding the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Safety Operations, please contact Sergeant Robert L. Hill at 323-890-5480 or via email at RLHill@lasd.org.
