Advisory: #LASD Traffic Services Detail, DUI/CDL Checkpoint on Friday, February 2nd, 2018, Commerce

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

Commerce, CA – Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Services Detail will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on February 2, 2018, at an undisclosed location within the city limits between the hours of 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

In recent years, California has seen a disturbing increase in drug-impaired driving crashes.  Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department supports the new effort from the Office of Traffic Safety that aims to educate all drivers that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.”  If you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI.  Marijuana can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can result in a DUI.

The deterrent effect of High Visibility Enforcement using both DUI checkpoints and DUI Saturation Patrols has proven to lower the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug impaired crashes.  Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized proactive DUI operations are conducted routinely.

DUI Checkpoints like this one are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public.

In California, alcohol involved collisions led to 1,155 deaths and nearly 24,000 serious injuries in 2014 because someone failed to designate a sober driver.  Over the course of the past three years Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies have investigated 3,374 DUI collisions which have claimed 72 lives and resulted in another 2,609 injuries.

Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, with officers checking drivers for proper licensing, delaying motorists only momentarily.  When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving, which now accounts for a growing number of impaired driving crashes.

Studies of California drivers have shown that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems.  A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent).  Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol. Everyone should be mindful that if you’re taking medication whether prescription or over-the-counter – drinking even small amounts of alcohol can greatly intensify the impairment affects.

Drivers are encouraged to download the Designated Driver VIP, or “DDVIP,” free mobile app for Android or iPhone.  The DDVIP app helps find nearby bars and restaurants that feature free incentives for the designated sober driver, from free non-alcoholic drinks to free appetizers and more.  The feature-packed app even has social media tie-ins and even a tab for the non-DD to call Uber, Lyft or Curb.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspensions and other expenses that can exceed $10,000 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.

Funding for this checkpoint is provided to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding everyone to ‘Report Drunk Driver – Call 9-1-1’.

AS A DRIVER, PLAN AHEAD WITH THESE TIPS:

Arrange rides home for your friends, family, co-workers and yourself before the drinking begins

Identify and provide free non-alcoholic drinks or other promotional items to the Designated Driver

Party hosts and servers must limit drinks to your guests or patrons. Don’t serve more than one or two over several hours.

Cut back on the amount of drinks you plan to bring to the party – and provide plenty of food.

Advisory: Sheriff McDonnell Swears in Twelfth Member of the Velazquez Family to the #LASD Family

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

Law enforcement agencies often say to potential applicants that working for us is like joining a family.  Well for the Velazquez family they have taken this to heart.  On January 29th Sheriff McDonnell swore in Alexis Velazquez at the downtown Los Angeles famed Hall of Justice.  This made her the twelfth of the Velazquez family to work for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Alexis, who was already a POST-certified law enforcement officer, laterally transferred to LASD from Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

In 1984, Deputy Enrique Velazquez joined the LASD and began a longstanding tradition of service within his family.  His career in law enforcement inspired four of his nine siblings to become LASD members, one to join the Los Angeles County Fire Department
and connected several of the siblings in marriage to other LASD members.

The generation of siblings in law enforcement, in turn, inspired a second generation of do-gooders:  In 2014, Enrique’s daughter, Alexis, became a Ventura County deputy sheriff, in 2016, his son became a Los Angeles County deputy sheriff, and in 2014, his niece, Laura Marie Velazquez, became a Law Enforcement Technician with LASD. The Velazquez clan are the largest known number of direct family members within our agency to work together, not only as real-life family members, but as part of a larger, law enforcement family.

During the swearing in ceremony the room was filled with family, co-workers and personnel who have had the privilege to work alongside Enrique throughout his illustrious career.  During the press conference Sheriff McDonnell noted “It cannot be overstated what this sustained commitment means to our organization. There is, perhaps, no greater endorsement and affirmation of a career than to look to one’s child and say, I encourage you to continue this noble tradition of service. I thank Detective Velasquez for his trust in our organization to nurture Alexis’ career, facilitate her professional development, and provide her an environment in which she can aspire to one day outrank her dad.”

Other than Detective Velazquez, the LASD, public safety lineage includes:
1. Lieutenant Margarita Velazquez (Operation Safe Streets),
2. Detective Pedro Velazquez (Detective Division)
3. Lieutenant Magdalena Velazquez (North County Correctional Facility)
4. Deputy Leo Lane (Palmdale Sheriff’s Station)
5. Detective Laura Velazquez-Bruner (Special Victims Bureau)
6. Sergeant Greg Bruner (Palmdale Sheriff’s Station)
7. Detective Susan Rogers Velazquez (Special Victims Bureau)
8. Sergeant Michael Adams (Pitchess Detention Center-South Facility)
9. Deputy Enrique Velazquez (North County Correctional Facility
10.Law Enforcement Technician Laura Marie Velazquez   (Temple Sheriff’s Station)
11.Sheriff Explorer Ryan Velazquez (Palmdale Station)
12.Firefighter/Paramedic Maurilio Velazquez (Los Angeles County)

During the formal badge pinning ceremony it was noted that Alexis’s badge was formerly owned by her father. Astoundingly, the Velazquez family represented a total of 256 years of proud service spanning different jails, patrol stations, detective bureaus, and specialized units of assignment.

Advisory: *UPDATE* Detectives Make Arrest in Knock-Knock Home Burglary, 1800 blk AƱo Nuevo Dr, Diamond Bar, 3 Outstanding

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

On Monday January 22, 2018 at approximately 1:30 P.M., a residential burglary occurred on the 1800 block of AƱo Nuevo Drive in Diamond Bar.  The victim’s residence was equipped with surveillance cameras which captured the incident.  The surveillance camera footage was released to the media in hopes of gaining additional information leading to the identification and arrest of the individuals responsible for the residential burglary.

On January 27, 2017 at approximately 9:30 P.M., 19-year old Tyree Moguel, from the Los Angeles area turned himself in at the Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff’s Station admitting he took part in the aforementioned burglary. He was arrested and booked for residential burglary and is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. Moguel is the suspect seen standing alone in the photo.

The release of the surveillance camera footage to the media, gave the detectives the break they needed by forcing one of the individuals to come forward.  Three of the suspects however remain outstanding.

The suspects are described as two male blacks, approximately between the ages of 18 and 20, wearing a black, and gray hoodie sweatshirts and sweatpants.  The third suspect (not seen in the footage) drives up to the residence in a white, newer model four door vehicle, possibly an “Audi” with tinted windows and paper plates.  The suspects are seen running towards the white vehicle, getting in and fleeing.

The Sheriff’s Department continues to ask for the public’s assistance with information on the identity of these suspects. Detectives also urge the public to remain vigilant and if they “see something say something.”  Be aware of your surroundings and alert law enforcement when you see an unfamiliar/suspicious vehicle in the neighborhood.

Click on the link to view surveillance footage of the crime:

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact Walnut/Diamond Bar Station Detective Alfredo Gomez at 909-859-2832.  If you prefer to remain anonymous, you may call “L.A. ******** Original Press Release ********
On Monday, January 22, 2018 at approximately 1:30 P.M., a residential burglary occurred on the 1800 block of Ano Nuevo Drive in Diamond Bar.

Walnut/Diamond Bar Station deputies responded to the residence and discovered the rear sliding glass door had been shattered by the suspects to gain entry into the residence.

Investigation revealed that the victim’s residence was equipped with surveillance cameras which captured the incident.  The footage (provided) clearly depicts one of the suspects knocking on the front door to determine if anyone is home.  Once the suspect was satisfied no one was home, he alerted his fellow burglars and they made their way into the rear yard.

One suspect is then seen shattering the glass sliding door.  The suspects ransacked the residence, stole a laptop computer and an “Apple Ipad 2.”

The suspects are described as three male blacks, approximately between the ages of 18 and 20, wearing black, gray and light blue hoodie sweatshirts and sweatpants.  The fourth suspect (not seen in the footage) drives up to the residence in a white, newer model four door vehicle, possibly an “Audi” with tinted windows and paper plates.  The suspects are seen running towards the white vehicle, getting in and fleeing.

The Sheriff’s Department is asking for the public’s assistance with information on the identity of these suspects. Detectives also urge the public to remain vigilant and if they “see something say something.”  Be aware of your surroundings and alert law enforcement when you see an unfamiliar/suspicious vehicle in the neighborhood.
