Community: Miniature Therapy Horse Visits Local Sheriff's Station #LASD #miniaturehorse

Dear Nixle User,

Employees at the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station were paid a unique and uplifting visit this past weekend when miniature therapy horse “Valor” stopped by with owner and trainer Victoria Nodiff-Netanel.  As part of non-profit organization “Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses”, Victoria and other volunteers take these specially trained horses across the world to visit with children and adults in need of inspiration and friendship in the most unlikely of ways.  Teams of horses and their handlers visit 35,000 people each year, from children and first responders of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, to hospices and Veterans homes throughout the country.

The dedicated volunteers that make up the Gentle Carousel Team have seen firsthand the benefits that their horses bring.  Children suffering from extended illness, victims of child trafficking, survivors of natural disasters and terrorism, wounded veterans, and the elderly are given a reason to smile when a miniature therapy horse walks through their door.  Children show cognitive growth when given the chance to interact with the horses on a regular basis, and adults are reminded of the childlike amazement in seeing something magical as these pint-size ponies for the very first time.

Victoria will be attending a September 11th Law Enforcement Memorial event in Washington D.C. soon and will be bringing her own therapy horse, named by the family of an officer killed in the line of duty during the attack.  Victoria is a local of the unincorporated Los Angeles County area, and has been raising miniature therapy horses in the area for many years. Her passion is uniting her horses with veterans and families of fallen peace officers, and she is thrilled to be a part of Animal Assisted Therapy.

Please visit Victoria’s website minitherapyhorses.com as well as Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses on Facebook.

Advisory: **Update** Death Investigation, Green Pleasure Pier, Avalon, #LASD Homicide Bureau

Dear Nixle User,

Sheriff's Homicide Detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in the Green Pleasure Pier, Avalon.

Detectives learned that on Tuesday, December 30, 2014, at approximately 10:55 PM, several boats broke free from their moorings during a storm.  Deputies from Avalon Station and personnel from the City of Avalon Harbor Department, were working together to secure the loosed boats. One of the Harbor Department’s boats came perilously close to hitting rocks, so one of the patrolman jumped from the vessel to get to safety.  Two deputies attempted to rescue him from the water but were unsuccessful; the patrolman became lodged between the vessel and the rocks under the turbulent waves and could not be reached.

At approximately 6:30 this morning Avalon Station personnel received a call regarding a body found in the water.  Deputies recovered the body and found that it was not the body of the patrolman, but a second male victim.

At 11:00 AM Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau Emergency Services Detail divers recovered the body of the patrolman.

The cause of death for the victims will be determined by the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner personnel. Their identities will not be released until the next of kin have been notified.

There is no further information available at this time.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Community: CHP, LAPD, LASD street racing enforcement detail leads to guns, drugs and stolen cars off the streets.

Dear Nixle User,

The CHP recently identified and noticed an increase of sideshow/street racing activities in Southern California. These events continually draw in participants who create a public safety hazard through their unsafe driving and obstruction of public roadways. As a result of their aggressive driving, assault with deadly weapons, shootings and general disturbances of peace frequently occur in our communities.

These events have directly impacted public access to roadways, businesses, and private property. Acts of vandalism by spectators aiding and abetting in street racing have been committed against innocent motorists attempting to pass through these illegal events. Because of this, the CHP partnered with LAPD and LASD to create a street racing detail to aggressively put a stop to these dangerous activities.

On Saturday December 27, 2014, the CHP, LAPD and LASD, collaborated in an operation to deter illegal street racing, stunt driving and cruising in Athens, Huntington Park, Walnut Park and North Long Beach communities. An example of these illegal activities was when the Eastbound Interstate 105 from Crenshaw Blvd to Vermont Ave was temporarily closed by these groups by stopping traffic with their cars and taking over the freeway in order to race. CHP responded promptly and took enforcement action.

The operation was a great success for the CHP. A total of 18 arrests, 27 citations and 26 vehicles impounded. Individuals were arrested on charges related to the following:

-stolen firearms/stolen vehicles -possession of narcotics
-evading arrest -outstanding warrant arrests
-DUI -reckless driving while being unlicensed

Sideshows are reckless, unsafe and unlawful. They pose an extreme danger to those participating in the activity, other motorists and bystanders. People involved in these activities should expect the CHP to take decisive action against them, including citations with enhanced fines, vehicle impoundments and jail time for felony and misdemeanor charges.

If any member of the public is witness or endangered by this type of action, call 9-1-1 and provide license plate numbers, descriptions of vehicles and subjects involved.
