City of Malibu Emergency Services

Advisory: Winter storm forecast to bring 1"-2" of rain to Malibu Tues night 11/26 - Fri 11/29

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

The National Weather Service forecasts that a Pacific storm will impact Malibu Tuesday night, November 26 through Friday, November 29. Rainfall totals are forecast of 1.00” - 2.00” and up to 3.00” in the mountains (not coastal areas), and peak rainfall rates of 0.25” - 0.50” per hour. Brief heavy downpours are possible with a chance of hail. There is a slight chance of thunderstorms, with higher rainfall rates possible up to 1.00” per hour Wednesday night through Thursday night during isolated thunderstorms. Another storm is forecast Saturday night, November 30.

STORM PREPARATIONS
As part of the City’s storm preparation plan, staff are monitoring storm conditions and crews will be patrolling and clearing roads of rocks and debris, clearing storm drains and culverts to prevent flooding, placing temporarily concrete k-rails to prevent flooding and debris flows, and pre-placing heavy equipment at areas sensitive to flooding and debris flows. Sheriff’s Volunteers On Patrol (VOP) will be patrolling City streets and reporting issues. The City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Staff is on standby and the EOC will be activated if conditions warrant.

HAZARDOUS ROAD CONDITIONS
Residents should be prepared for hazardous driving conditions due to water, mud, rocks and branches in the roadway, possible flooding, mud and debris flows, especially in steep hillside and canyon areas and in the Woolsey Fire burn area, and potential power outages. Do not attempt to cross flowing streams and flooded roadways. If you become trapped call 911 and seek high ground. Motorists must approach all intersections where traffic signals are out as if they are all-way stop signs (come to a complete stop, then proceed), as required under the CA vehicle code.

SANDBAGS
Free sandbags are available at all Fire Stations in Malibu and at Zuma Beach Lifeguard Headquarters. Plastic sandbags are prohibited in the City of Malibu, please use burlap only.

POWER OUTAGES
In case of power outages, residents should use battery, solar or handcrank radios or car radios to monitor weather and emergency information on KBUU 99.1 FM, KNX 1070 AM and other news stations, since radios will continue to function when power is out. Have back up batteries for cell phones and tablets. Make sure you know how to open your garage door manually, and make sure your driveway gate can open, or leave it open.

CREATE A PLAN
Create an evacuation plan and identify a primary exit route and a secondary exit route. Keep your vehicle gas tank full. If you have family members with disabilities, mobility issues or are dependent on medical devices, or have animals, consider leaving the area early. Pack a Go-Kit: Have an emergency supplies kit ready including prescription medication, important documents, extra warm clothing, cash and other necessities.
