Community: Ways to Reduce the Risk of Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault #daterape #LASD

Dear Nixle User,

A notable increase has occurred in the past few years in the frequency of reports of drug-facilitated sexual assaults of older adolescents and young adults at bars, nightclubs, rave clubs, and social parties. The effects of these drugs occur rapidly, reduce inhibitions and cause relaxation of voluntary muscles, and cause the victim to have lasting anterograde amnesia for events that occur under the influence of the drug. Alcoholic beverages potentiate the drug effects.

Protect yourself by review the following precautions.

1.      Don’t leave your drink unattended while talking, dancing, using the restroom, or making a phone call.

2.      At parties, don’t drink from punch bowls or other large open containers.

3.      If someone offers to get you a drink at a club or party, go with them to the bar to order it, watch it being poured, and carry it yourself.

4.       Watch out for your friends. Always leave the bar or party together. If a friend seems out of it, is way too intoxicated for the amount of liquor they have had, or is acting out of character, get them to a safe place immediately.

5.      If you think you or a friend has been drugged, call 911, and be explicit with doctors so they give you the right tests (you’ll need a urine test and possibly others). The National Sexual assault Hotline (800 656-HOPE) can often send an advocate to the hospital to help you through the process.
