Community: Join Big Brothers Big Sisters of Conejo Valley and Impact a Child's Life @BBSVCInfo @VENTURASHERIFF #LASD

Hi Nixle User,

Local Big Brothers Big Sisters Event Inspires Law Enforcement

As the holidays quickly approach and we start to feel the pull of the giving spirit grow around us, many of us start looking for ways to give back to our community and try to brighten the lives of the ones we walk amongst on a daily basis. What if you could do something that improves your life as much as it does the person receiving your aid?  Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) has been facilitating mentorship throughout the Conejo Valley for over 44 years, providing friendship, guidance, and commitment to children in need. Youth from single-parent families, low-income households, or with a history of physical, emotional, or substance abuse, are matched with suitable adult mentors from Calabasas to Ventura, and every community in between.

Thousand Oaks Chief of Police Tim Hagel and Westlake Village Liaison Lieutenant Jennifer Seetoo attended a Big Brothers Big Sisters event hosted by local resident and President of BBBS Conejo Valley, Richard Burke.  Foreseeing the positive impact this program will have on their communities, Chief Hagel and Lieutenant Seetoo are committed to partnering their efforts and inspiring citizen involvement with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.  From a law enforcement perspective, getting the youth submersed in BBBS mentorships deters potential criminal behavior in a child's future. Hagel and Seetoo were honored to support this worthy cause, and meet CEO of BBBS Conejo Valley, Lynne West.  Lieutenant Seetoo was also joined by Conejo Valley School District candidate, and BBBS supporter, Brian Sullivan.  She was extremely moved to witness the success of the program, having the opportunity to meet former youths who have grown to become contributing members of the community.

Studies show that youth who have had to deal with negative life situations typically show a pattern of negative social and familial relationships, poor decision making, poor grades and problems related to drug and alcohol abuse.  The team of dedicated Big Brothers and Big Sisters has made it their mission to facilitate positive, life lasting bonds and national research has shown that the program is successful.  According to a study that analyzed the impact of the BBBS program, kids that were matched with suitable mentors were:

*  more confident in their school performance

*  able to get along better with their families

*  46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs

*  27% less likely to begin using alcohol

*  52% less likely to skip school

Imagine if you could be a part of these numbers.  What if you could turn a child's life around and be the positive role model that they desperately need, help them to see the potential inside themselves. And what if you could do this by just being a part of someone's life, talking to them, spending time with them doing things you both love to do?  If you can't commit to the time it takes to support a youth, your donation will go a long way to improve their lives instead.  To change the life of a child aged 6-18 specifically in the Conejo Valley area (which includes the cities of Westlake Village, Agoura Hills and Calabasas), or to donate to this division directly, please visit www.BBSvc.org or call their local office at (805) 484-2282.

Community: Smile, You're on #Camera... Motor Deputies Now Using Helmet Cams #LASD

Hi Nixle User,

Smile, You’re on Camera…

Whether you were given a minor “fix-it” ticket or just let off with a warning, you can bet everything was caught on video by Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s motor deputies new helmet cameras. Motorcycle deputies at the station have just recently acquired approval and funding for new six helmet-mounted cameras meant to record and retain information on every traffic stop the deputy makes throughout the day.  The light weight, aero dynamic design makes the Contour the perfect match for the helmets.

The Contour+2 is the most recently available video camera of this type and is capable of recording HD footage on a wide angle lens in order to capture all the details of the deputy’s interaction with other motorists.  Unlike stationary cameras mounted inside other police cruisers, the helmet cameras capture everything from the motor deputy’s point of view, including a clear image of vehicle occupants, license plate and vehicle description, driver’s license information, as well as the physical surrounding area of the traffic stop.  Everything the deputy sees, the camera sees, up close and in detail. The recordings are downloaded at the end of each shift and stored on computers at the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station.

As well as visual recordings, the cameras also record the audio track of traffic stops, all information that could prove invaluable should the motorist decide to take the issue to court.  Senior motor officer, Deputy McGee, researched the different types of cameras, as well as a way to fund the program, after he had to pull out his personal cell phone to record a situation with an unhappy motorist who was stopped for speeding.  The video from Deputy McGee’s cell phone was the deciding evidence that the DA used to file charges against the violator.  “It would have been much safer to use a helmet cam” Deputy McGee stated.  On average, motor deputies make about 20 traffic stops a day.  When a future court day may be months away, data from these cameras assist the deputy in being able to recall minor details to portray the most accurate scenario possible, and to clear up any discrepancies.

Along with capturing information for record keeping, and possibly the most important purpose of the cameras, they also provide data that could prove useful as officer safety information.  Should a deputy witness any type of violent crime, traffic accident, or himself become involved in a fight where suspect information is needed immediately, information can immediately be retrieved from these new cameras.  Equipped with real-time GPS and designed to upload content onto a computer via a 4GB memory card, information can quickly be recovered in a life or death situation.

A big thank you to the Malibu/Lost Hills Booster club, a 501© organization that provides equipment and training to the deputies that the Sheriff’s Department does not have funding for.
