Advisory: **PHONE SCAM ALERT** Be advised!

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has been advised that citizens are receiving phone calls from individuals who are representing themselves as Department employees.  The caller usually tells the citizen that there has been a warrant issued for their arrest for failure to appear for Jury Duty.  The caller will tell the victim that they have to pay a sum of money or deputies will come and arrest them.  The caller will instruct the victim to either get a Money Order, conduct a wire transfer, or buy a Gift Card (usually Green Dot) and send it to “pay the fine.”

BE ALERT, BE ADVISED, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department or any Government Agency will NEVER call and solicit money for fines.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department does not solicit warrant information by phone. The Sheriff’s Department or any Government Agency will NEVER ask you to get a Money Order, Gift Card, or wire transfer.  Sheriff Department personnel will never go to your home to collect a fee for a warrant.

BE AWARE, NEVER give your personal information to anyone over the phone.  DO NOT give callers information about your bank account, pin numbers, Social Security number or any type of identifying information.

Phone Scam Thieves are just that “Thieves” they will try and trick you into giving them money and information.  If you receive a call protect yourself, your information and DO NOT SEND MONEY!

If you receive a phone call, always verify who the caller truly is, DO NOT use a phone number they provide you as verification.  Usually numbers provided by the thief will go to a voice recording/message.  Call your local Sheriff Station to verify any solicitation.

If you have sent money or believe that you are a victim of a crime, please call your local Sheriff’s Station or Police Department and report the incident.

If you receive a suspicious phone call/solicitation that you believe is not from a real government agency, please contact The Department of Consumer Affairs at (800) 593-8222.  You can also file a complaint on the DCA website at dca.lacounty.gov.

Community: Gang Member Sentenced to Death for Double Homicide in Paramount, September 21, 2015

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

A 32-year-old man was sentenced yesterday to death for killing two rival gang members in 2007, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced.

Last February, a jury convicted defendant Luis Jesus Rodriguez of two counts of first-degree murder in case TA111998.

Jurors also found true special circumstance allegations that the killings were committed to further the activities of a criminal street gang and that the defendant had previously been convicted of first-degree murder. Additionally, jurors found true the special allegation that Rodriguez personally and intentionally discharged a firearm, which caused great bodily injury and death.

Deputy District Attorney Danette Gomez of the Hardcore Gang Division said Rodriguez was a documented Paramount Barrio gang member.

On July 28, 2007, Rodriguez armed himself with an AK-47 and had his brother drive him to the neighborhood of a rival gang member, the prosecutor said.

Once in the area, the defendant pulled up in front of a home and began shooting, striking Benjamin Velasco, 19, and Julio Ramirez, 21. Following the shooting, Rodriguez fled the scene. Both victims were taken to the hospital, where they ultimately succumbed to their injuries, the prosecutor said.

Three days later, Rodriguez was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of victim Salvador Deavila, who was killed on June 24, 2007. Rodriguez was convicted of Deavila's killing in 2008 and sentenced to 50 years to life in state prison in case TA091961.

The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Community: Pico Rivera Burglar Caught Hiding Inside Closet, Pinned Down until Deputies Arrived

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

On Sunday, September 20, 2015, at approximately 7:00 pm, an elderly couple returning to their Pico Rivera home in the 9400 block of Melita Street found one of their bedrooms ransacked.  After calling their son-in-law, who arrived and searched the home, the suspect was found hiding in a closet.  The suspect was holding what appeared to be a weapon in his hand, and the son-in-law quickly struck the suspect in the face with his fist.  The elderly man and his son-in-law held the suspect, pinning him to the floor until the arrival of Pico Rivera deputies, who took the 40 year-old suspect into custody.

The suspect was not injured, however he was transported to a local hospital for medical clearance for booking.

The suspect, Cesar Vargas, a resident of Pico Rivera, was arrested for burglary and possession of drug paraphernalia.  He was booked at Pico Rivera Station and is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

The elderly couple and their son-in-law were not injured.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact Pico Rivera Sheriff's Station, Detective Villegas, at (562) 9492421-2700, or the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.  If you prefer to provide information anonymously, you may call "Crime Stoppers" by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477), or texting the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or by using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org

Advisory: Hikers discover body of a man in the San Gabriel Canyon, Angeles National Forest, #LASD, #San Dimas Station

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

On Saturday, September 19, 2015, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, San Dimas Station, received a call from a resident indicating they had found an apparent dead body while hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains.  The San Dimas Mountain Search and Rescue team was activated after deputies from the Air Rescue 5 helicopter confirmed the discovery.  The search and rescue team members responded to the area of Prairie Fork Road (mile marker 0.13), just south of the Bridge to Nowhere in San Gabriel Canyon.  Due to the fact the body was covered with mud and debris, extrication was delayed.  Members of the Sheriff’s Department provided security at the scene throughout the night.

On Sunday morning, September 20, 2015, the Sheriff’s Air Rescue 5 helicopter airlifted investigators from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department's Homicide Bureau and the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner–Coroner into the scene.  The body was extricated and removed from the area early Sunday afternoon.

No identification of the body, other than it is that of a man, is available at this time.

Further investigation as to the exact cause of death will be determined by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner–Coroner personnel.  The investigation is on-going.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact San Dimas Sheriff's Station at (909) 450-2700, or the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.  If you prefer to provide information anonymously, you may call "Crime Stoppers" by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477), or texting the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or by using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org.
