Advisory: Agoura Hills Acting Coach Found Guilty of Lewd Act on 13-year old Girl

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

Los Angeles County District Attorney News Release:

An acting coach was found guilty on August 26, 2015 of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl six years ago.

Jurors deliberated for about a day before determining Cameron Thor (dob 3/17/60) was guilty of one count of lewd act upon a child and the special allegation of substantial sexual contact was found to be true. Thor faces up to eight years in state prison when he is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 9.

Simone Shay of the Sex Crimes Division said the victim took private classes from Thor at his Agoura Hills home. In March 2009, Thor drove the girl, then 13, to the Santa Monica Mountains where he sexually assaulted her.

Thor was arrested last year.

This case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Victims Bureau. Original News Release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Community: #LASD Carson Station DUI/CDL Checkpoint, City of Carson, planned for Friday, August 28, 2015, @CarsonLASD

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

Driving Under the Influence / Driver’s License (DUI/CDL) Checkpoints are conducted by deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on a regular basis.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Carson Station will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on August 28, 2015, at an undisclosed location within the City of Carson, between the hours of 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely.

In California, this deadly crime led to 802 deaths in 2012 because someone failed to designate a sober driver. Nationally, the latest data shows nearly 10,000 were killed by an impaired driver. "Over the course of the past three years in the contract cities policed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, DUI collisions have claimed 33 lives and resulted in 898 injury crashes harming 1330 of our friends and neighbors," said Sgt. Daniel A. Dail of Traffic Services Detail.

Deputies will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment with officers checking drivers for proper licensing delaying motorists only momentarily. When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving. Recent statistics reveal that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems. A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent). Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent. Nearly 90 percent of California drivers approve of DUI checkpoints.

DUI Checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000 not to mention the

embarrassment when friends and family find out.

Funding for these operations is provided to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety http://www.ots.ca.gov/ through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration http://www.nhtsa.gov/, reminding everyone to ‘Report Drunk Driver – Call 9-1-1.

Community: Don't be an impaired driver, be a designated driver. Results of Impaired Driver Task Force in Antelope Valley,

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

California Highway Patrol Officers arrest 23 people during a night-time Impaired Driver Task Force in Antelope Valley, likely preventing those drivers from hurting themselves or others.

Antelope Valley CHP Officers deployed during a night time operation, Saturday, August 22, 2015, to remove as many impaired drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs or combination thereof.

Special events such as the 77th Annual Antelope Valley Fair and Alfalfa Festival bring out families from the comfort of their homes to enjoy the festivities. Tragically, every year, innocent people lose their lives to drivers who recklessly choose to drink and drive. However, this Task Force is an example of resources the CHP will continue to employ to enhance safety within Los Angeles County communities and reduce roadway deaths related to impaired drivers.

"Impaired driving remains the most frequently committed preventable crime in the United States of America; and studies show that the certainty of apprehension is a greater deterrent than the severity of punishment; and the Peace Officer is society's first line of defense against the most devastating and preventable crime." Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (M.A.D.D)

"It's not worth it. Driving while under the influence is unnecessary. Call a friend, a taxi, take public transportation or call Uber." said Antelope Valley Commander Gretchen Jacobs, "The way we see it is that you either find a designated driver or we'll give you a ride, to jail."

For more information please contact CHP Antelope Officer G. Hernandez at (661) 948-8541 for more information.
