Share on Facebook Share on Twitter

Community: This Week is National Volunteer Week! Thank You to All Our #LASD Volunteers.

Dear Nixle User,

The Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station is extremely proud of our volunteer program each and every day, but would like to give special recognition during National Volunteer Week. Each day, including weekends and holidays, members of our community donate their time and expertise to the Sheriff's department. Our volunteers work hand in hand with our patrol deputies, detectives, and administrative personnel making the cities of Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Calabasas, and Malibu safer.

The Lost Hills Sheriff's Station has numerous volunteer programs. Over 200 volunteers participate in the volunteer programs.

Each year, Lost Hills Station volunteers work thousands of hours. These hours translate into a cost savings of hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to the cities they serve. They also provide extra eyes and ears patrolling the streets, the extra set of hands we need during emergencies, and the support we need to complete various tasks.

If you are interested in volunteering, The Lost Hills Station has a position for you. Our volunteers bring a vast amount of experience and knowledge to the station. There are numerous assignments where volunteers can see tangible results and receive immediate gratification that they are making a difference.

For more information on volunteering, contact Deputy Mike Woodard at 818 878-5506. Information can also be obtained at the Lost Hills Sheriff Station.

Community: Impaired Driver and Street Racing Task Force over the weekend nets multiple arrests...

Dear Nixle User,

Los Angeles - April 18th – April 20th, California Highway Patrol Officers assembled and deployed an enforcement task force to counter impaired drivers, street racing and sideshow violations.

Saturday night's Impaired Driver Task Force detail was comprised of 26 officers, whom are highly skilled in alcohol and drug influence detection. Their primary task is to seek out and arrest drivers who are under the influence. The officers focused their efforts in the downtown Los Angeles area where they were able to arrest multiple impaired drivers and prevent loss of life and property damage.

The detail was very effective and resulted in several arrests and citations:

• 29 DUI Arrests
• 9 Traffic Citations
• 138 Verbal Warnings
• 26 Impounded Vehicles
• 10 Disabled Motorists were assisted

Sunday night's Joint Agency Enforcement included CHP, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department and several local allied agencies. A proactive enforcement task force was launched to suppress street racing in Carson and the Southbay Area. Citizens have voiced their concerns about their neighborhoods being used as race tracks. Additionally, people have been hurt and killed as a result of sideshows and illegal street racing.

The detail was very effective and resulted in several arrests and citations:

• 47 Misdemeanor Arrests (suspended license, speed contest, exhibition of speed)
• 206 Citations
• 54 Impounded Vehicles

"If you participate in illegal street racing and sideshows, trust me when I say, you will not get away with it too long before the California Highway Patrol will find you and make it an unforgettable experience for you." said Southern Division Chief Bill Dance, "We will not tolerate our streets being turned into race tracks. Streets are meant for people to travel through without being in fear of getting hit by reckless irresponsible drivers."

The California Highway Patrol and its local partners will continue to utilize enforcement task forces to saturate Los Angeles County communities in an effort to make our streets and highways safe for everyone.

Advisory: LOS ANGELES COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT'S AND HELEN REARDON VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR RECOGNITION AWARD

Dear Nixle User,

WHO:  Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Community Partnerships Bureau.

WHAT:  2015 Volunteer of the Year pinning ceremony and Helen Reardon Volunteer of the Year Recognition Award.

Please join Sheriff Jim McDonnell and members of his command staff in honoring the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s volunteers. Sheriff’s Department volunteers have been an inspiration to the community and have worked side by side with sworn personnel. The selfless hours generously donated by the Sheriff’s Department’s nearly 3,600 volunteers totaled 450,993 hours in 2014, which if given a dollar figure equivalent would amount to $11,162,079. This unselfish giving has been instrumental in the success of the Sheriff’s Department’s volunteer and community outreach programs.

Each year the volunteer coordinator nominates one volunteer per station or unit. The nomination is based on several factors, including accountability, leadership, a “can do” attitude, professionalism, compassion, respect for diversity, and customer orientation. One volunteer is then chosen by a panel and awarded the title, “Helen Reardon Volunteer of the Year.” The award was named in recognition of Helen Reardon who was significant in the founding and formalizing of the volunteer program within the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in the mid-1980s under Sheriff Sherman Block.  Volunteers who have achieved significant hours of 5,000 to 20,000 throughout their volunteer career are awarded a lapel pin with the hours achieved engraved on the pin and presented at the ceremony.

WHEN: Saturday, April 18, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
