Community: Halloween safety tips for motorists and pedestrians.

Dear Nixle User,

Safety Tips for Motorists

Driving is a complex task, requiring a motorist's full attention. Drive cautiously, anything that diverts your eyes or attention from the roadway; even for 1-2 seconds, could result in tragedy.

The bottom line, whatever the distraction, "It's Not Worth It!" Be aware and vigilant of pedestrians and reduce your speed while traveling through neighborhoods.

The law is explicit: Driving with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08% or more is illegal, but even with a lower BAC a driver may be a hazard and taken to jail.

A DUI crash or arrest can be averted in a number of ways:

- Not drinking, if you are the driver
- Riding with someone who has not been drinking
- Using public transportation
- Calling a taxi or a friend
- Staying where you are for the night.

A popular option among couples and groups in recent years has been selecting a designated driver—a person who abstains from drinking so he or she will be a sober driver.

Always be cautious of your surroundings. Be on the lookout for children crossing and running across the street

Never pass a vehicle that is stopped for pedestrians.

Look carefully behind your vehicle for approaching pedestrians before backing up.

Safety Tips for Pedestrians

Use crosswalks and follow traffic signals when crossing at street lights but still pay close attention to vehicles on the road.

Be careful at intersections where drivers may fail to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians while turning onto another street.

Before stepping in front of a car make eye contact with the driver. Make sure they see you, that they plan on stopping and they have time to stop.

Increase your visibility by carrying a flashlight and wearing some sort of reflective clothing.

It is safest to walk on a sidewalk.

Pay attention. Always be aware of your surroundings and watch for vehicles when crossing a street or stepping off a curb.

Don't go into a house to get candy or eat unwrapped candy and food.

Be careful crossing multiple lanes of traffic. Make sure each lane of traffic is clear before you cross.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nearly three out of four pedestrian deaths occur:

- In urban environments
- At non-intersections
- During the nighttime and many involve alcohol

The California Highway Patrol encourages everyone to have a joyful, safe and memorable Halloween weekend, but please be careful and make it home safely to your loved ones. We hope these tips help you stay safe. Happy Halloween!

The California Highway Patrol has primary responsibility of traffic laws in residential neighborhoods in the 140 unincorporated communities in Los Angeles, including Altadena, East LA, East Pasadena, Hacienda Heights, Ladera Heights, Marina Del Rey and Stevenson Ranch.

Dear Nixle User,

Teen Driver Safety Week Shows High School Students Effects of Distracted Driving

For most parents, handing over the keys to the family car to their newly-licensed teen driver can be a very stressful thing. That is not surprising, considering that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens. The crash risk is particularly high during the first month a teen driver has received their license. According to the Department of Transportation, 2,055 teen drivers were involved in fatal crashes in 2013 alone. California Highway Patrol says 11 teens die every day as a result of distracted driving. These numbers are meant to get your attention- and so is the nationwide Teen Driver Safety Week campaign.

To heighten the awareness of teen driver safety, the West Valley CHP, along with deputies from the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station, hosted a Teen Driver Safety demonstration at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks. Each year, the event is held at a different local high school, Notre Dame chosen this year in honor of former student Conor Lynch, who was killed four years ago by an 18 year old distracted driver. Sponsored by the Mercedes-Benz Safety Driving School, local safety officials effectively show students how dangerous distracted driving can be. Students are put through two different types of hands-on simulated courses, including a "distracted" course, in which a passenger distracts the driver with text messages, loud music and even louder chatter. Students were tested on their ability to maneuver through a cone course while dealing with these distractions, and many students reported being surprised at how poorly they performed under these conditions.

CHP officers supplemented the demonstrations with safety discussions and a press conference, where CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow stated to parents "This week is dedicated to focusing attention on setting rules for your teen driver before letting them get behind the wheel." CHP recommends setting ground rules with your children and practicing a no-tolerance policy. Discuss the issues of texting while driving, speeding, drinking and driving, and riding without a seatbelt. Teaching kids these basic safety tips will help them begin to form life-long driving habits that can potentially save their lives.
