Advisory: Advisory: #LASD DUI/CDL Checkpoint Nets 22 Arrests, on Friday, September 22, 2017, Palmdale

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Services Detail conducted a DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint on Friday, September 22, 2017, at 10th Street West and Technology Drive, Palmdale, between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.

In recent years, California has seen a disturbing increase in drug-impaired driving crashes.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department supports the new effort from the Office of Traffic Safety that aims to educate all drivers that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.”  If you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI.  Marijuana can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can result in a DUI.

Studies of California drivers have shown that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems. A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent).  Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol.

1304- Vehicles Screened
1-Driver arrested for Driving under the influence of alcohol
1-Driver arrested for driving under the influence of marijuana
1-Driver arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol/marijuana
17- Drivers cited/arrested for operating a vehicle unlicensed or while suspended/revoked
2- Drivers cited/arrested for operating a vehicle without an Ignition Interlock Device
11- Vehicles released per DUI/CDL checkpoint release procedures

Drivers are encouraged to download the Designated Driver VIP, or “DDVIP,” free mobile app for Android or iPhone.  The DDVIP app helps find nearby bars and restaurants that feature free incentives for the designated sober driver, from free non-alcoholic drinks to free appetizers and more.  The feature-packed app even has social media tie-ins and even a tab for the non-DD to call Uber, Lyft or Curb.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspension and other expenses that can exceed $10,000 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will be conducting other DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoints and DUI Saturation Patrols in the future in our ongoing commitment to lowering deaths and injuries upon our streets and highways.

The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding everyone to ‘Report Drunk Driver – Call 9-1-1’.

AS A DRIVER, PLAN AHEAD WITH THESE TIPS:

Arrange rides home for your friends, family, co-workers and yourself before the drinking begins.

Identify and provide free non-alcoholic drinks or other promotional items to the Designated Driver.

Party hosts and servers must limit drinks to your guests or patrons. Don’t serve more than one or two over several hours.

Cut back on the amount of drinks you plan to bring to the party – and provide plenty of food.

Advisory: #LASD Crescenta Valley Station, Montrose Search and Rescue Team's 70th Anniversary Fundraiser

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

On Sunday, September 24, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Montrose Search and Rescue (MSAR) Team hosted a fundraising event as part of their 70th Year Anniversary at Newcomb’s Ranch Restaurant located on Angeles Crest Highway at Mile Marker 50.93, Angeles National Forest.  The MSAR Team operates out of the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station and is celebrating their 70th year of dedicated service to the citizens of Los Angeles County (1947 – 2017).

The team is a Sheriff Department approved registered California non-profit organization and independently raises funds to purchase needed vehicles and equipment.  On display at the event was the team’s new rescue truck which was built with private grant money at no cost to the Department or the citizens of Los Angeles County.  Celebrity Jay Leno was in attendance and donated a private tour of his famous garage of collectible vehicles as a raffle prize.  Also present were prior rescued citizens who during the event provided personal stories of their heroic rescue and survival.

MSAR members are Reserve Deputies and volunteers who are highly trained to perform technical rescues, and to provide on-scene emergency medical treatment.  Last year, the MSAR responded to 90 calls for service and the members performed numerous lifesaving rescues.  This year the MSAR Team has already responded to over 100 rescue calls exceeding last year’s total rescues.

Advisory: UPDATE #LASD SEB, Barricaded Susp Arrested at 6500 blk Sea Cove Drive, Rancho Palos Verdes

Dear Pepperdine Libboard,

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB) has concluded their tactical response regarding the armed barricaded suspect at the 6500 block of Sea Cove Drive, Rancho Palos Verdes (RPV).

SEB deputies learned that on Monday morning, September 25, 2017, Lomita Station personnel responded to a “Disturbance” call at the 6400 block of Sealpoint Court, RPV. When deputies arrived they were informed that the suspect was armed and left the location.  The suspect was seen in the backyard of a residence in the 6500 block of Sea Cove Drive, RPV.

After several hours and many verbal attempts by LASD Crisis Negotiations Team members to persuade the suspect’s surrender, he refused to comply. SEB deputies successfully deployed a diversionary device and the suspect surrendered to deputies without further incident.

The area was deemed safe and all neighborhood evacuees were allowed to return to their homes.

The suspect, 36-year-old Paul Carriere, from Rancho Palos Verdes, was arrested and transported to Lomita Station where he was booked for “Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon”, and is being held in lieu of $35,000.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Lomita Station at (310) 539-1661.  If you prefer to provide information anonymously, you may call "Crime Stoppers" by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477), use your smartphone by downloading the “P3 Tips” Mobile APP on Google play or the Apple App Store or by using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org.
