Community: #LASD - Compton Concerned Citizens Help Deputies and Paramedics Prevent Tragedy, Possibly Saved Life of Driver
Dear Pepperdine Libboard,
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Compton Station personnel received multiple 9-1-1 calls of someone possibly driving under the influence, that was traveling westbound on Alondra Boulevard near Central Avenue, Compton, on Thursday, March 30, 2016 at approximately 5:05 p.m.
The callers indicated the driver of a big rig was driving erratically, zigzagging, and running red lights. The driver had also nearly collided into several cars and nearly struck a woman as she exited her vehicle. The vehicle was described as a large 18 wheeler tractor-trailer big rig.
Compton Station deputies located the big rig as it drove erratically at less than 5 mph. As they pulled behind the big rig to conduct a traffic stop, they saw the driver slumped over the steering wheel. The deputies activated their lights, siren, and utilized their P.A. system in an attempt to gain the driver’s attention. The deputies heard the sound of the air brakes being pumped and released, indicating the driver was trying to slow/stop the big rig. It quickly became apparent to the deputies that the driver was in some sort of distress. After a short distance, the big rig finally came to rest.
Deputies contacted the driver and immediately knew this was not a case of someone driving under the influence, but rather a medical emergency. The deputies rendered aid until the arrival of Compton Fire Department personnel who determined the driver to be diabetic with an extremely low sugar level and on the verge of insulin shock. Paramedics administered on-scene medical aid before releasing him to the care of a co-worker.
With the assistance of concerned citizens, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Compton Fire Department ultimately prevented a tragedy and possibly saved the life of the driver. The incident is a prime example of the community, law enforcement, and the fire department working together as a team to enhance public safety.
