Community: Two Southern Division CHP Officers awarded the Medal of Valor.

Dear Nixle User,

The Governor's State Employee Medal of Valor is the highest honor California bestows upon its employees. Since the program began in 1958, more than 500 medals have been awarded. In a public ceremony the Governor awards Gold or Silver medals to State employees who risked their lives to save others or State property. Among this year's 52 recipients of the medal of valor is 10 California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers, one CHP sergeant, and one CHP lieutenant. These individuals were recognized for their acts of heroism extending far above and beyond the normal call of duty during a ceremony last Thursday, April 23, 2015, at the CHP Academy in West Sacramento.

The following are summaries of two heroic actions performed by CHP personnel:

Officer Jacob Moniz, #18366

On April 7, 2011, at approximately 5:35 p.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Jacob Moniz encountered a man walking on the right shoulder of the busy eastbound Interstate 10 in West Covina. Using the patrol vehicle's public address system, Officer Moniz instructed the man to stop. The man stopped initially and then walked into the far right lane.

Officer Moniz left his vehicle, walked to the right shoulder, and gave the man several clear instructions to come back to the right shoulder. The man seemed to comply by taking a few steps towards the Officer, then he suddenly turned and ran straight into traffic.
Without hesitation, Officer Moniz ran after the man, grabbed the back of his clothing, and prevented him from running directly into the path of a passing big rig. Upon questioning, the man revealed he intended to commit suicide.

Officer Michael Burton, #17895

On July 20, 2014, at approximately 9:35 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Michael Burton was off duty and traveling with his family in Kern County when he encountered a traffic collision involving a pickup truck that had gone off the road and overturned onto its roof.

Officer Burton pulled over to assist. He realized the driver was trapped inside the cab, but he could not reach him because the roof was crushed and the doors would not open. The engine compartment was smoldering and igniting. Two men arrived and with Officer Burton bearing the brunt of the effort, they were able to roll the truck back on its wheels. Officer Burton tried to reach the driver, but the fire increased and smoke filled the cab, eventually becoming so thick he could no longer see the driver. A Kern County deputy arrived and attempted unsuccessfully to put the fire out with his fire extinguisher.

Suddenly, the driver reached through the shattered rear window and cried for help. Officer Burton climbed into the truck bed, grabbed the driver's arm and began pulling. Before long he was able to free the driver's other arm, head and shoulders, and then pulled him out. With the assistance of the deputy, Officer Burton carried the man to safety seconds before the truck became fully engulfed in flames.

CHP Officers perform countless selfless acts every day that go unnoticed. Today, we honor two officers who uphold and maintain the reputation of serving both on and off duty the people of California. Their loyalty, dedication and willingness to lay down their lives is deserving of much more. Please join the California Highway Patrol in honoring these brave officers who work on Southern California Freeways.

Community: CHP Officer saves two kidnapped children.

Dear Nixle User,

On April 21, 2015, the Sacramento Police Department notified the California Highway Patrol Emergency Notification and Tactical Alert Center, that two young girls, ages 6 and 9, did not return home from school. Their mother reported them missing and endangered.

Sanjuana Muñoz-Vazquez was named as the suspect, a 43-year-old, Hispanic female. She is the non-custodial mother of the victims, reportedly fleeing to Mexico with the children in a white 2003 Honda Civic.

On April 23, 2015, at approximately 7:35 p.m. Officer R. Valadez, from the CHP Santa Fe Springs station, was traveling southbound on the I-605 freeway, at Carson Street. His attention was drawn to a white Honda Civic, which matched the description of the suspected kidnapping vehicle. A license plate check revealed the car was in fact directly associated to the kidnapping of the two sisters.

Officer Valadez conducted an enforcement stop on the Honda and determined the two girls fit the description of the kidnapped victims. The driver identified herself as Sanjuana Muñoz-Vazquez and was taken into custody without incident. Ms. Vazquez admitted she was heading to Mexico with the girls without consent.

The sisters were transported to the CHP Santa Fe Springs station, where they were transferred into the care of Child Protective Services. Ms. Vazquez was booked at the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department, Century Station. She was charged with 207 P.C. (Felony) – Kidnapping.

Community: #LASD Deputies Participate In a Journey of Honor: Bicycling to Washington D.C. in the Police Unity Tour

Dear Nixle User,

On May 10, 2015, nearly 1,800 law enforcement personnel from across the Nation will participate in a bicycle tour to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C. to raise funds and awareness for our fallen peace officers. Additional sheriff and police officials will join the tour to provide support for the riders, making this one of the largest law enforcement events in the United States.

The Police Unity Tour is the largest donor to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund. Last year’s event raised over $1.9 million, which was donated to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Since 1997, donations total nearly $16 million.

The Police Unity Tour – Southern California Chapter will have over 300 riders and supporters participating in the event, including 27 personnel from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department:

On May 10, 2015, the group will fly with their equipment to Somerset, New Jersey, where they will begin the three-day, 280-mile journey through Philadelphia, Delaware and Maryland, and complete their circuit in Washington D.C.. They will join other law enforcement officers from other Police Unity Tour Chapters across the United States as they ride into Washington D.C. to kick-off National Police Week.

The 27th Annual Candlelight Vigil will be held on May 13, 2015, at the Memorial in Washington D.C., where the names of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Brandt Ross (End of Watch: 09-24-1921), Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Reserve Deputy Otto R. Ellinger (End of Watch: 12-06-1934), and Los Angeles County Safety Police Lieutenant John Wyndell Robinson (End of Watch: 12-24-1980) will be formally dedicated and included in the Memorial, along with the names of other law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty during 2014. The Memorial contains the names of over 20,000 fallen heroes.

The Police Unity Tour’s motto, which is simply stated, “We Ride For Those Who Died,” is just that: Law enforcement personnel joining together to complete a bicycle tour, raising awareness for their professional brothers and sisters who died in the line of duty, and raise funds for the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial and Museum. It was organized in 1997, by Officer Patrick P. Montuore of the Florham Park Police Department, New Jersey, and began with 18 riders on a four-day, fund-raising bicycle ride from Florham Park, New Jersey, to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.. That event raised $18,000.
