Community: Domestic Violence is a Community Problem #LASD #domesticabuse #DV

Dear Nixle User,

Domestic violence and child abuse often occur in the same family and are simultaneously linked to several consequences for members of the larger community. Children who are exposed to domestic violence are at greater risk for substance abuse, juvenile pregnancy, and criminal behavior than those raised in homes without violence. Many studies have noted that children from violent homes exhibit signs of more aggressive behavior, such as bullying, and are up to three times more likely to be involved in fighting.

Physical abuse leaves marks. But while emotional abuse leaves no physical scars, and therefore may be the hardest type of abuse to understand, the negative impacts of one partner using verbal assault, fear and humiliation often go unrecognized by the victim.

Noticing and acknowledging the signs of an abusive relationship is the first step to ending it. Here are ten signs that you might be in an abusive relationship:

Does Your Partner…

1.       Act jealous or possessive?

2.       Make threats to hurt you or those you love, including your pets?

3.       Threaten to hurt him or herself if you end the relationship?

4.       Pressure you sexually?

5.       Cause you to feel afraid all or most of the time?

6.       Try to make you feel worthless?

7.       Withhold approval or affection as a form of punishment?

8.       Physically or emotionally abuse you?

9.       Control your access to money?

10.   Isolate you?

If you recognize yourself or someone you know in the following warning signs and descriptions of abuse, reach out. There is help available.

National Domestic Violence Hotline (24 hour) 800 799-7233

If there is immediate danger, call 911.

Community: Target-Hardening and How to Better Protect Your Vehicle From Break-Ins #LASD

Dear Nixle User,

Vehicle break-ins are again on the rise within the cities we serve. While there is no fool-proof way to protect your vehicle against a break-in, there are ways to deter potential criminals from making you the next victim. According to LAPDonline.org, the average cost of a vehicle break-in to each victim is roughly $1885.00. Please read the following target-hardening tips to learn simple ways to protect yourself.

Lock your doors

Up to a quarter of vehicle thefts are from unlocked cars, according to some law enforcement agencies.

Conceal all the evidence

Remove cell phones, wallets, digital stereos, cameras, purses, etc. Even items such as cell phone chargers and the tell-tale suction cup markings from a GPS unit alert potential criminals that valuables may be hidden inside the vehicle.

Stash before you park, not after

Thieves often watch vehicles as they are parking to see if the driver appears to be hiding valuables inside the car- try to take these items with you instead of leaving them inside your vehicle.

Get an alarm

If you don't have an alarm system, get one. The noise alone may be enough to scare away an inexperienced thief and prevent the break-in.

Park for visibility

Park in a busy, well-lit area, and avoid concealment from larger vehicles, fences, or foliage.
