Advisory: #LASD Yellow LASD Stun Bag Shotgun Missing between the San Fernando Valley and Hollywood

Dear Nixle User,

A public safety alert has been issued by the Lost Hills Sheriff's Station after a bean bag shotgun was reported missing from the trunk of a patrol car. The gun was reported missing after deputies drove from Agoura Hills to Hollywood.

At about 7:30 AM, Saturday, January 3, 2015, two Lost Hills Sheriff's Station deputies placed a stun bag shotgun with yellow markings on it in a black canvas carrying case into the trunk of their patrol vehicle at the station in Agoura Hills. They then left the station to handle an area child abuse call that was reported at a hospital in Hollywood.

The deputies drove eastbound from the sheriff's station at 27050 Agoura Road, turned northbound onto Las Virgenes Road and entered the eastbound 101 freeway in Calabasas. They continued eastbound on the 101 freeway and entered the southbound 405 freeway. They exited Skirball Center Drive on the 405 freeway and re-entered the northbound 405 freeway. From the northbound 405 freeway, they drove onto the southbound 101 freeway until at about 8:30 AM when they exited at Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.

The deputies stopped at the 101 freeway exit ramp and Sunset Blvd., where they were flagged down by a passerby who told them their trunk was ajar. The deputies turned east on Sunset Boulevard and pulled over. They got out of their patrol car and saw the trunk was ajar about 2-3 inches. An inventory revealed the bean bag shotgun and its carrying case were no longer in the trunk. All other equipment was still in the trunk.

Lost Hills Sheriff's Station deputies, Malibu/Lost Hills Search and Rescue Team deputies, and a Los Angeles County Sheriff's helicopter crew conducted an extensive search of the route the deputies had traveled. CHP and LAPD officers were notified and assisted. The bean bag shotgun and carrying case were not located.

The shotgun is loaded with four bean bag shells but can operate as a regular gun if loaded with live shotgun shells. It has a chrome colored barrel with a yellow stock. The yellow coloring on the gun is very visible. The shotgun is stamped "Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department." There is a piece of white tape on the firearm with “LHS 03” in black ink. The shotgun is in a black canvas carrying bag. (A photo of a similar shotgun and carrying case is available).

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is very concerned about finding this missing shotgun. The search is ongoing. The cause of the loss is under investigation, including to determine if the trunk latch was somehow blocked, if the trunk was not fully closed, or if the trunk latch somehow disengaged in transit.

If you have any information about this incident, please contact investigators at the Lost Hills Sheriff's Station at 818-878-1808. Or if you wish to remain Anonymous, call “LA Crime Stoppers” by dialing 800-222-TIPS (8477), texting the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org

Advisory: #LASD Child Safety Internet Awareness

Dear Nixle User,

The Internet has opened up a world of information for anyone with a computer and a connection. Your children will learn about computers.  As a parent, it is your responsibility to make sure your child stays safe online. Too many dangers from pedophiles to con artists can reach children (and adults) through the Internet.

GETTING STARTED
Explain that although a person may be alone in a room using the computer, once logged on to the Internet, he or she is no longer alone. People using the Internet can find out who you are and where you are. They can even tap into information in your computer. Set aside time to explore the Internet together.

CONTROLLING ACCESS
The best tool a child has for screening material found on the Internet is his or her brain. Teach children about exploitation, pornography, hate literature, excessive violence, and other issues that concern you, so they know how to respond when they see this material. Choose and download a commercial online service that offers parental control features on all your devices. These features can block contact that is not clearly marked as appropriate for children; chat rooms, bulletin boards, news groups, and discussion groups; or access to the Internet entirely. Purchase blocking software and design your own safety system. Different packages can block sites by name, search for unacceptable words and block sites containing those words, block entire categories of material, and prevent children from giving out personal information. Monitor your children when they're online and monitor the time they spend online.

TELL YOUR CHILDREN

·         To always let you know immediately if they find something scary or threatening on the Internet.

·         Never to give out their name, address, telephone number, password, school name, parents' name, or any other personal information.

·         Never to agree to meet face to face with someone they’ve met online.

·         Never respond to messages that have bad words or seem scary or just weird.

·         Never to enter an area that charges for services without asking you first.

·         Never to send a picture of themselves to anyone without your permission.

·         Once a picture, a message, a post is sent, it cannot be retrieved and will remain on the internet virtually forever.

·         It’s okay to say no and to never let anyone pressure them into doing something they feel uncomfortable doing.

·         That everything they read or see on the internet may not be true and that people online may not be who they seem.

WHAT YOU CAN DO IN THE COMMUNITY
Make sure that adults monitor access to the Internet at your children's school. Know your children's friends and their parents. Set reasonable rules for computer use and discuss them with your children.  Investigations have shown that children will likely have a social media page whether you approve or not, so it is imperative that you teach them internet safety.  If your child's friend has Internet access at home, talk to the parents about the rules they have established. Find out if the children are monitored while they are online. If your child receives threatening e-mails or pornographic material, save the offensive material and contact that user's Internet service provider and your local law enforcement agency.  If you come across sites that are inappropriate for children when you are surfing the Net or become aware of the transmission, use, or viewing of child pornography while online, report it to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Community: Getting in Shape for the New Year? Read These Hiking Tips and Get Outside #LASD #hikingsafety #newyearsresolution

Dear Nixle User,

Happy New Year to you all!! Most likely, you have decided to start the new year off right with some type of self-improvement resolution. Good for you. Maybe you have decided to take up hiking, a chance to enjoy this incredibly scenic community we live in. if that’s the case, here are a few tips to make your adventure safe and memorable.

What to Bring:

·         Map and Compass- While a GPS can tell you direction, most maps will also show campsites and water sources.

·         Fire, Flashlight and a Whistle- Plan for an emergency. In the event that you are out later than planned, these items can prevent hypothermia as well as attract attention of rescuers.

·         First Aid Kit- Be sure to include sunscreen and a multi-purpose tool along with the first aid essentials.

·         Extra Food and Water

What to Wear:

·         Dress in layers- This will allow you to adjust to changes in weather and changes in activity levels.

·         Appropriate Footwear- Wear trail shoes for less-impact hikes, and hiking boots for rougher terrain.

Planning:

                     ·         Tell someone where you will be hiking.

·         If you are bringing your dog, check to make sure you are traversing dog-friendly trails.

·         Bring an extra pair of socks and change immediately if your socks become damp or wet- this will prevent painful blisters.

·         Make sure you are hydrated well before starting your hike.

·         Start your hike early in the day to avoid prolonged sun exposure during peak hours of 10am-4pm.

·         Make sure your cell phone has a full battery charge.

Emergencies:

·         Don’t ignore signs of dehydration- headaches, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite- seek medical attention as soon as possible.

·         If you experience heat exhaustion (pale face, nausea, cool/moist skin, headache), drink water with electrolytes, eat high sugar foods, and rest in the shade for at least 30 minutes.

·         If bitten by a snake- minimize activity as possible. Don’t do anything to the area that was bitten. Keep the bite below the level of the heart- do not elevate. Get medical attention as soon as possible.

The best way to avoid an emergency is to always be alert- Be aware of your surroundings. If you are new to hiking, do plenty of research on how to be prepared and study the area you will be hiking. It is recommended to take an experienced hiker with you. The better prepared you are, the easier it will be to enjoy your experience.
