Community: Deputy Involved Shooting Investigation, 12200 block of Santa Fe Avenue, Lynwood #LASD Homicide

Hi Pepperdine Libboard,

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deputy-involved shooting that occurred in the 12200 block of Santa Fe Avenue, Lynwood, on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at 1:00 p.m.

Two Century Station Detectives were following up on a criminal case at a residence in the 12200 block of Santa Fe Avenue in Lynwood. Once their contact was completed, they were walking away from the location when the suspect, 45-year old, Kerry Wesson, exited his home nearby and shot at the detectives with a handgun. One detective was struck by the gunfire but was able to return fire.

The suspect entered his home, several more gunshots were heard, and then he barricaded himself inside.

Special Enforcement Bureau, Special Weapons Team deputies responded to the location and took tactical control of the barricade situation. During the standoff, which lasted over two hours, the suspect fired his weapon several times.

The suspect quickly exited his residence holding a semiautomatic pistol in his hand and was shot by Special Weapons Team deputies.

Suspect Wesson was pronounced dead at the scene.

No deputies were injured. The detective shot by Suspect Wesson was listed in stable condition at a local hospital.

It was determined that there was no connection between the suspect and the investigation the detectives conducted at the location.

The suspect’s weapon a loaded semiautomatic pistol was recovered from the scene.

There is no additional information available at this time.
